Outrageous alopecia "joke" by Jay Leno on Tonight Show. Anybody else want to write to NBC?

Last night on Jay Leno he did a bit about why products at the 99 cent store might be 99 cents. He showed a "fashion doll", somewhat like a Barbie, and after he opened it, showed why it was only 99 cents.

The doll only had long hair around the outline of its scalp, and was otherwise bald. He joked perhaps one could do a Donald Trump comb over...the usual yuks.

Then he stated "Maybe its an Alopecia doll I don't know".

I found this incredibly insensitive and insulting. I have a sense of humor and I have often made jokes about my bald head. But, the Alopecian community has worked hard at trying to get Alopecia dolls made so that kids who have it have something that resembles them.

Of course the audience laughed, and I'll bet most of them don't know what Alopecia is. The sad part is that there are a lot of us who at one point looked like that doll and I find no humor in that.

Let's write and complain to NBC!
(Thank you to Lili for posting about this on Facebook, where I saw it first.)

I've started a Facebook page to call for action on this and perhaps get NBC's attention. https://www.facebook.com/JayLenoAndNbcApologizeToPeopleWithAlopecia...

I often feel like as an Alopecian we are expected to have thick skin as though losing hair somehow makes us emotionless. There's been many times in the media where jokes have been made at our expense and everyone around me doesn't understand why it upsets me. Everyday I face the world I have to figure out how much I can take from everyone with looks, stares and comments. I have to choose if I should where a wig because the place I am going might be more accepting of me. It's not okay, had he made a comment like maybe the doll is going through chemo he would have probably had to apologize. It's a little frustrating...

He sure wouldn't have made a similar joke about any other auto-immune disease.

Ignorance is not an excuse, but it is still ignorance.  I hope someone calls him on it.  I'll bet he will apologize.

I always think some celebs feel they are above reproach and can say any kind of crap, albeit called humor to them and insult others, and get away with it. It just goes to show even people with money/celebrity, can be ignorant and stupid, and talk without thinking. I wonder how he likes all the funny looking chin jokes he gets.
