Please share with me your experiences with the steroid pills....can't think of what they are called.

Maygen started taking steroid pills that are suppose to surpress the immune system so that her hair will stop falling out and regrowth can occure. So far she has been on them for a week. She is still loosing hair. Hmmm....I do see regrowth, but it was there before she started the pills. She was using the steroid topical cream. I would just like to here the good, the bad, and ugly about these pills.

When I took that type of pill in college, I ended up with mononucleosis. HELLO? It SUPRESSES the immune system...the whole system. That's just my experience with the pills. Now as for treatment, there is no research out there as far as I have found to indicate efficacy for any treatment across the board and for the long term.
I'd get a second opinion.

Sometimes I take steroids for allergies in the summer (esp. when I move to a new place and need to adjust to the different pollens). My hair always starts to grow a little bit when I do this but I'm never on them long and when I stop it falls out over night.
Good luck

Didnt work for me - but I was only put on them for a month - "just to try it" - not sure if that was long enough but I really dont think you can cure Alopecia by suppressing the immune system - and that was how it was for me..

I think when I was on coticosteriods that they did slow the progression of the hair loss but not actually cause any rergowth. From what I was told, if you do get any regrowth from them, it is likely to fall out again once the pills are stopped. There is a pretty lengthy list of side effects associated with them, so most doctors will only put patients on them for 3 months max. I was lucky to not experience too many side effects - they did interrupt my sleep a bit and make me really hungry though (lots of people gain weight on them because of this). I hope you this helps a bit. I'm not sorry I tried them but they didn't do a whole lot for me. I think my hair had already decided it was going to fall out and nothing was going to change its mind.

My daughter just started a treatment of Prelone syrup (oral steroid) yesterday for the next 6 wks. The dose is tapered over the term & they feel it will be a great jumpstart to regrowth. So, we'll know more after 6 wks. In addition, she's taking topical steroids (clobetasol) & using Minoxidil 5%. We've started seeing some regrowth (not noticable from a distance) prior to starting the Prelone, so we are crossing our fingers this will work. It sounds like Maygen is on a stronger steroid (due to difference in age). I wish you guys good luck on this treatment. It's a tough process and hard to stay hopeful & realistic @ the same time. I choose to stay hopeful, but remain realistic about my daughter's prognosis. If I can't be, who will? :)
