RE:Statistic: AT and AU are 5-7% of the 1-2% (4million) people that have AA??

Het Ya'll!
Have you guys heard of this statistic before? That would mean that only about 200,000-280,000 people actually get AT or AU and the rest never do?? So where are those people??? I have not really met any on this site or anywhere else on the internet. Could this be a wrong statistic? It seems like to me, mostly everyone that has AA, eventually gets AT and or AU after a while. Thanks for any feedback!!

Hi Melissa!
This site might lead one to believe that most of the cases of AA turn into AT or AU, but I think that's because the people who get a spot or two either never make it to this site or stop coming once the problem resolves (which is apparently statistically the most common case). While there seems to be a predominance of AT and AU members here, there really are also plenty of members here (myself included) who are just dealing with spots. If you look through enough old blogs you should be able to find plenty of them, although as you have obeserved there seem to be more cases of AT and AU.

I've had Spotty AA for like 4 years or more now and still no AT or AU (knock wood) although I wouldn't mind the silky smooth skin you AUers have all over!! I'm still hairy as heck everywhere a woman doesn't want to be!!

Same with me Dominique, what the heck is up with that! Sometimes you have to laugh or you just cry!

Thanks Jeff for the comment! How long have you dealt with the spots for? Do you get treatments? This AA has wore me out. Now I just try to not look at myself in the mirror too much and try to ignore it but it is always there, bugging me. Im so tired of it...

Hello Melissa,

I've had AA on and off for 20 years. At times it seems a little worse ( more or less spots)- but so far it has only been AA. of course the unpredictability of what might happen is stressful and exhausting. SO I understand your comment "AA has worn me out" me too!!!

I just recently met someone and her husband has AA - it's only been AA and it only occurs when he is stressed.

Hi Heather, thanks for the comment! How do you deal with it?? I'm 38 years old now and I'm wondering if this is just going to be too hard for me to bear for the rest of my life!! I would love to talk with you! Thanks!

Melissa,

I am so where you are!!! I just turned 39... and I often think to myself- how in the world am going to deal with this "forever"!! I did have once a 14 year remission... so it is possible and I just keep on praying for a repeat of that!! Any time you want to talk I'm here! :)!

Thanks Heather! WOW A 14 year remission?! That is awesome! So you had this when you were younger? What is your pattern of AA? Mine is the kid that wraps around the back of your head. Easy to hide but still it is very annoying! How is your AA doing now?! Thanks again for the feedback! Take care! Melissa

Hi Melissa,
My AA started last December. I was shedding like crazy for several months and I struggled terribly with it. Every time I saw clumps of hair in the drain and piles of hair all over the bathroom rug and my pillow my heart sank a little. The back of my head looked like I had mange or something. It sometimes made it hard to enjoy all of the good things in life that were really still always there. I was fortunate in that the hair loss gradually subsided (ultimately without treatment) and now most of the spots have recovered and the few that are left are pretty easy to hide and seem to be slowly recovering as well. While it hasn't all come back, I no longer have any unusual hair loss. My hope is that maybe in 6-12 months time all of the spots will be gone forever but hopefully I'm prepared for whatever may happen. I've got it pretty easy now as for me the worst seems over. The best thing I can tell you is that recovery is always possible. My brother had AA and fully recovered as well. So keep hoping and think positive! This is only one aspect of your life, so remember all of the good in your life and don't let this spoil those things! Feel free to write me anytime. I'll gladly offer you support and whatever help I can!
Jeff
