Today I went into walgreens & was headed to the bathroom when I met this old lady . The bathroom door is locked where you have to have a code to get in . ( which I think is stupid , especially when you feel like you're going to pee your pants . lol ) But anyways , I met her & she didn't know how to get in , so I went and got the code . We got in ( this sounds like some kind of top- secret mission . ) & we were talking and when I was getting ready to leave , she asked me if I was sick or what was going on . I was wearing my bandana & I told her all about my alopecia . When we left the bathroom we talked some more & I found out she lost some of her hair because of stress . She said she took vitamins & just wore a wig . It was so nice . I am so thankful that I met her . The thing I like most is , she didn't straight out ask me if I had cancer . I am so happy because it was such a nice talk . I feel prepared . So If someone asks me If I have cancer , I know that I can handle it . She asked me what my name was & told me she would be praying for me . She was so nice . I just wanted to share that with Y'all . Thanks for reading ! ~ Mackenzie

Thanks for sharing. Yesterday a woman DIDN'T assume I had cancer when she saw my bald head, and instead asked me what was going on. After I told her, she said that she thought it might not be cancer, so that's why she didn't ask if I have cancer. EVERY TIME ONE OF US GOES OUT BALD OR IN A SCARF, WE RAISE AWARENESS OF MORE PEOPLE. That's all it's going to take for more and more people to NOT make the cancer assumption automatically.

I agree Mary . I'm glad one more person knows about Alopecia . I went to a family reunion today and people asked me why I shaved my head . I explained to them that I have what my mom has & I am happy that I shaved my head . It's kind of funny when I think about it . A few years ago my mom went to the family reunion without a wig & today I did the same thing . And my cousin told me he thinks I look fine with just my bandana & not to worry about a wig . It was nice to hear that from him . I feel so free !

Aimee...that hasn't happened to me with bald children yet. With adults - I've only seen one other bald woman in public, and she and I embraced each other (see my story about Argentina). Bald guys - I often smile and say "nice hairdo", and they laugh and compliment me back. One guy I could tell didn't have eyebrows, and I just went up to him and said something like " Hi, I have alopecia." Then he told me he did, too.

Kids....that's a good question. What to say? How about "I see you have the same hairstyle I do"...then wait a moment and see if they (or their parent) said anything that might indicate the cause.

Let's discuss this further...( ;-)

That is awesome!! Way to go. I am so proud of you. It is very nice to know that there are people in this world who do not always associate hairloss with cancer. You are beautiful Mackenzie.
