I have a little story for you.

Well, I really don't like solicitors. One of the reasons I don't like solicitors or uninvited strangers at my door is b/c I usually don't have my hair on in my home and to answer the door I always rush to find and put on my wig. I allow myself to feel like a prisoner in my own home when I do this.

So today there was a knock at the door. I was urk'ed and decided I was NOT scrambling to get my hair on. So I ANSWERED THE DOOR WITH OUT MY HAIR. In my mind I was thinking "I'll show him!"

When I opened the door the guy introduced himself that he was from the Census Bureau and that he just needed to conduct an interview for the household. I told him I already sent it in. He looked a little frightened (probably b/c of my tone, not as much with my baldness),and explained to me that there were many that were lost. I know how important this all is, so I invited him in and the interview proceeded.

He was very nice. (And had a very high receding hairline himself.) He tried hard not to look at my head, but I caught him doing so a couple of times. lol

In the end I felt empowered that I did it. It turned out fine. I wasn't worried or sweaty. Or nervous. I had NO problem being myself being bald with a complete stranger.

WOW!

I really meant it to be a laugh at first.
If it would've been a Kirby guy or some idiot selling something stupid, it would've gained a whole different satisfaction for me. But this was different. It was more like a growth.

Peeps, for what it's worth (serious head on now), I was in the same position when I went bald back in the '70's - it was a big No-No for guys as well then, very similar to how it is for gals now.
I did the "bit-by-bit" thing, till I got to the stage where I could handle comments and stares and didn't give a damn about what others might think. And now look how it is for guys.... it all seemed to reach a critical mass in the mid-'90's, when you'd see more and more bald fellas about. Since then, who cares about bald men? (except themselves, narcissistically... :) )
So Mary's right - make it commonplace, and then no-one'll care!

Good Luck, Girls! xx

Yes, yes, yes, Norm.

Remember when Patrick Stewart became the new Star Trek captain (around 1988, I think)? Billboards said: "To baldly go...." It was a big deal for a bald man (actually only partially bald) to be in that leading man role. These days, not a big deal.

Good for you Carmen - hopefully one day I'll open the door without first putting my wig on . I have thought about doing it often but as of yet have not found the courage.

Mary, wasn't there also a bald women on the episode/movie at the same time? I remember some of the guys at work commenting how sexy she was.

I think you're thinking about the character of "Ilia" in the very first Star Trek movie (with the original cast). That came out in the late '70's. Some Halloween, I'm going to dress as her! The character was supposedly so sexy that she had to take a vow of celibacy when she came onboard the ship, as I recall. Here are some photos, or just Google "Ilia Star Trek":

I've taken to wearing a bald wig around the house now. My friends say it's amazing - they'd never have known! :)
I'm also considering getting a white cat, so I can answer the door in the style of a James Bond super-villain. That'll sort out the opportunists from the "real" callers. Oh yes. ;)

I remember that Star Trek gal. She was supposed to be so attractive to men that she'd taken a vow of celibacy.... yeah, I'm there too, but in my case it wasn't voluntary :( (but :) , really!)

Wow Ilia is ill! and for you old fogeys LOL! that means she's a fox! No wonder my Treky Sc-fi loving dad thinks bald chicks are hot.

Sadly, the actress passed away quite young.

Hi there Dom - yeah, some of us old fogeys DO like bald chicks, but not for the reason you think - if they're bald, they don't have to spend money on hairdressers, shampoo, etc., and also take less time looking after hair they've not got. So they can spend it on us guys instead :)

Hey Norm, don't forget us baldies take less time getting ready to go out - don't have to spend hours fussing with our hair.

Petra, you're right - not having any kind of social life meself *, I never imagined anyone else having one either. :)
There's also less plumber's fees cos you don't have to call him (or her) out to unblock the sink as often... y'know, thinking about it, why would anyone want to bother with hair???

* ...this may not be entirely true... :)
