Tomorrow it will be a week since I shaved my head. The honeymoon is over and the reality of being bald is sinking in. Today was a rough day. Having second thoughts about shaving my head. I felt very self conscious. It took me forever to work up the nerve to go out for a walk. I don’t own any caps and my bandanas I usually wear to the gym now slip off. I finally got the bandana to work. Later I went to the store and that was total agony. After spending some time praying and meditating about it, I realize it has to do with my visit to a friend on Wednesday.
In addition to being my friend, she is also my coworker. Anyhow, she asked me if I’d told our manager about shaving my head. I haven’t. Most of our team works from home and we only go into the office one or twice a month. I thought I’d be fine going into the office bald. Now I’m having second thoughts.
I also figured out why I’m a bit resistant to wearing a wig. I’ve always been a tomboy. Whenever I think of wearing a wig, it stirs up the same emotions I felt when my mother forced me to wear dresses. Just like anything in life, it has its ups and downs. Tomorrow’s a new day!
I was a tomboy once, too. Can you get an avant garde or trippy wig that will still make a statement...or wear a signature hat?
Hi Whatever you decide, it's important that you feel comfortable with it. Being bald in public is for sure daunting for the first time, but as many others on AW will testify, it does get easier. Nevertheless only you can decide what's best for you.
Take care
David
im proud of you for doing it. i dont know what i want to do. my decision is really tearing me apart right now. i cant do anything with my hair except for a ponytail or high bun. i cant wear my hair in a braid even, or a low ponytail. it just is devastating.
Take your time, @jamie. I've been thinking about shaving my head for years. It's just recently that I worked up the courage to do so.
Alopecia makes us brave when and where we NEVER wanted to be. You cannot make a bad decision...it is YOURS to make and to own. Who careds what others think. I actually came to this belief after 2 months of agony. For me, wigs are the answer and believe me, I,too, did NOT want a girlie, curlie wig. There are SO many styles to choose from and I feel like me again. Blessings to you in whatever you decide to do!
You do need to feel comfortable in whatever you decide. Only you can make that decision.
I have had alopecia universalis almost all my life. I choose to wear hair.
If you want something that has real hair, is lightweight, and cool in the heat, you may consider the gripper.
Let me know if you are interested.
I only wish the best for you in this journey. I will pray for you.
What is the gripper?
