Wigs, Wigs, and more Wigs! (Questions)

Hi all!
Since I have female pattern baldness, I might get to a stage where my natural hair is no longer attractive and I will want to wear a wig. If and when it gets to that point, I would ideally like to shave my head first, against my mom's tears and grandma's begging and pleading. (It royally sucks that they're so unsupportive of me getting this crap out of my life. At least grandma supports the wigs, though she still tells me to promise I wouldn't do the big shave...)

Anyway! Until I can afford the vacuum wig (should I need it), I need as much guidance with wigs as I can get. What's better - human hair or synthetic? Lace front or mono top? Any suggestions as to how to take care of a wig? What products (or wigs) stay on your head best in the wind? I would not want it blowing away in the breeze! What wigs are the most natural looking? Any way to make them feel less itchy (or not itchy at all!)?

Any suggestions you can give to me would be great! Thanks!

Alexandra

Hi Alexandra,
I am at the same stage you are and you took the words right out of my mouth. I'll be looking for suggestions you get. Mary

It really depends on what you like. There are some women who like synthetic wigs. I don't. I think they look to shiny. I had a lace remy wig, which did the job. I liked the netting. I used tape, and it held STRONG. Never had a problem. However, I really ddn't like "remy" hair. If you look at my pics, you can see it was stiff and brittle. Theres only two wigs there and my natural hair, so you can see the difference. I would try to get European hair...but this is gonna cost ya more, but it's softer, with a lace base. Again, keep researching. good luck. I know, it's confusing.

Hi there this is such a confusing phase isn't it. We are also new to the wig thing but I would like to share with you some things that caught us unawares.

My daughter Nicole is AU, her first wig was a human hair wig which was lovely, however it faded really badly and we apparently can't colour it.................this hair was originally dark or black and they strip the colour out of it and then colour it to the shade you buy. I so wish we could colour it because it is a nice wig and cost alot of money............so if anyone can give me advice to the contrary I would greatly appreciate it.

The wig she has now is a Freedom vacum wig which is virgin hair that can be coloured. Make sure you really research any wig you buy because they aren't cheap and you want it to fit in with your lifestyle.

Good luck
Sharon

Well it looks like we're all in need of some help! I wish I could offer some advice, but I'm new to this myself and only know from costume wigs.
So the questions still remain, Alopecia World!
P.S. - Thanks, Lee, for offering advice! It definitely comes in handy!

I'm not sure JeezLouise because perhaps it is Remy hair I don't really know alot about it either. They said because it had been stripped of it's natural dark colour (bleached I gather) then recoloured that a colour would wreck it.............please tell me if I'm wrong Nicole would luv to colour it. I thought that remy hair was a different type of human hair it isn't like virgin hair.

Sharon! Hi!
You said your daughter has a Freedom wig. How does she like it? Is it easy to style and does it look natural in an updo?
Also, how did she find her human hair wig? Did it stay on well?

Hi Alexandra. Nicole luvs her Freedom wig. We have just come back in from being out in our boat and she is again able to stand up with her face in the wind when we are at top speed and not worry about it coming off =)

If you have alook on our page there are pics of her Freedom which is her in the sunglasses and her first wig is the one in front of the xmas tree. That also was great but she had to tape it on and she was never really too confident that it wouldn't come off. Also when she swam in it it was like a wet towel around her head now she can just dry her hair like normal.

I am going to take some pics of her with her hair up tomorrow so will post them for you to have a look at also.
