Hi everyone--just looking for some thoughts on this. My gym is having its one year anniversary next weekend. I normally go to the gym with just a scarf on, but I've never gone out in public otherwise…Continue

Looking for some tips here! This week I am going on my first ever trip with my wig. I am sort of excited to be someplace where I will not run into anyone who will give me a strange look with my new…Continue

Married
About Me:
I am almost 35 and was diagnosed in April 2011 with scarring alopecia. Having a mother who started to lose her hair in her mid-30s, I was always worried it would happen to me, then it did. I suffer from scarring alopecia and have had burning, soreness, itching, and gradual hair loss for the last decade. This August, I cut off my dreadlocks which I had been wearing for 12 years since the thinning and receding were getting to be too much, and my dermatologist suggested giving my scalp a "break." I am wearing a wig now and contemplating what the future will bring.
Do you have alopecia?

When the worst thing happens at work

Posted on August 31, 2012 at 10:46am 7 Comments

Hi anyone and everyone who might read this. Yesterday I went into work for the first time since I got my wig (I have a job where I can work from home if I want to). I had been dreading going in because these were the people who I knew might say something because they've known me a long time, but people I don't feel close enough to to bear my soul and all my travails with my hair. The person I was most concerned about is the guy whose office is next to mine (I'll call him Jim). He's a real…

First (and 2nd) wig!

Posted on August 24, 2012 at 12:47am 7 Comments

Hello anyone who might read this. Well, I did it--I cut off my hair today! I now have two beautiful wigs. I will post some photos tomorrow hopefully. They will still take some getting used to--I look VERY different and I am unaccustomed to having brushable/combable hair! But so far so good. I cried a lot while it was being cut but once it was over I felt free. The wig is very nice and light. Now for shampoo/conditioner... and hats! Oh, how long it's been since I've worn a hat.

Very sad today... and my mom

Hello anyone who might read this. Well, after several weeks of research, discussion, tears, and more, I have finally, finally decided what my first wig will be and confirmed my appointment to come in and have my head shaved and the piece applied. In a way, I feel relief--the anticipation part will soon be over and I can get down to the business of dealing with what it's like to be in this new phase. I admire you all who have been on this journey so much.

For me, one thing that is…

Second post

Hello everyone. First off, thanks to you all who commented on my first post. I went away on vacation and saw a bunch of family, including many young nieces and nephews. While it was fun, I kept thinking over and over how this will be the last time anyone on my husband's side of the family will see me with my natural hair. The little girls loved playing with my hair and I was just so nervous about them making a comment about my growing bald spots. Thankfully they did not. But ack.. why do I…

Hi,
Yes, human hair wigs are quite different from synthetic wigs. I know what you mean. Unfortunately, synthetic wigs don't last a long time. However, the shorter the length, the longer that you can make it last. Oh yes, definitely! That's why I created a group on here called "Wigaholics". They can be a lot of fun!

Hi Claudia! Thanks for the add! I am happy that my posts and my story are helpful! That is what AW is for! I wish you luck in your journey and I know that your day tomorrow will be filled with mixed emotions, but you have to remember that hair is just an accessory!! It doesn't make you who you are! Just choose to accessorize with a smile and happy heart!

Thanks for the kind words. Just got a little misty. *sniffle*
By the time you're ready to cut your locs you'll feel pretty clear about it. Then possibly, like many of us, you may wonder why you didn't do it sooner. Take your time. It'll come when you're ready.

Claudia, I'm glad to hear that I have been an inspiration to you. It was very difficult back when I was diagnosed in April 2010, but now that time has passed by I have grown and now have more courage and confidence to go out in public with my head held high. Shaving my head was the BEST thing I did to help me cope with my alopecia. I hope and pray that you too will find the same confidence that I did when I shaved my head. God Bless.

Hello Claudia it is noce to meet some people that live in my area. I feel so alone in all of this. My kids have been great with all of this and trying to make me feel better but it just seems like I keep asking myself "why me" I had always had long, thick beautiful blonde hair and now I feel lost and not sure what to do.
