29 year old female with so called FPB. How do I cope? To wig or not to wig?

I am a 29 year old female who has had problems with hair loss over the past year.
I have been to doctors, natropaths, dermatologists you name it to try and figure out why.

I have had blood work done and it seems to not be iron related etc.

I have been told by some it is FBL I find it hard to deal with and also that it could be chronic telogen. Its so hard not knowing why this is happening to me or if it will ever get better.

I am thinning a lot around my part and at the front of my hair. I am so self concious that people are looking at it.

I have tryed a wig brought off the net from Australia but it is sooo itchy even with a wig cap.

Any suggestions on where to buy a realisti wig off the net that is comfortable and doesn't look old ladish? I feel like I am young and don't want to look like a grandma.

Sometimes I wish I just had no hair as at least I could get funding for a good quality wig.

There is a company here in NZ where called Freedom wigs where they nake real hair wigs for alopecia sufferers but you have to have no hair at all. I know it is horrible to say but it seems like there is no help for people suffering from FPB

Any advice on how I can cope to feel more confident and where I can get a realistic wig online that is comfortable? As I am in New Zealand I don't have alot of options here. It is driving me nuts

Jennah,

I completely understand as I have lost anywhere from 30% to 50% of my hair at any given time. It comes and goes and the treatments for it are painful and seemingly useless. I have shopped the internet for wigs and asked others that do wear them. I have found the best thing to do is go and try them on if you have a place in your area. If not the most reasonable place I have found to buy one (and it was mostly comfortable) was Paula Young online @ Paulayoung.com. The wigs with the whisper lace front are said to be the best. I can't really afford those so I went with a style called the 'Ryan" and like it for the most part. It is comfortable or as comfortable as it can be.

Hi Jennah, I made a couple bad purchases when I first started buying wigs! Many were poofy and made me feel like an old lady. What helped me was watching wig reviews on youtube.

I bought a wig named "Stevie" by Amore (I think that's the brand), and it was a lil scratchy but less so, and looked more natural. That wig will never look as my real hair did, but it's a vast improvement from some of my other purchases.

I've yet to try on a wig that doesn't feel at leas a little scratchy and a bit uncomfortable. But I'm just starting out on this journey. I'm wondering if I'll get used to to it eventually. I wear a wig (only sometimes) because it helps me deal with it better... specifically in certain public situations. This is a very personal decision, but I say do what makes you happy... and if you're looking for a natural looking wig, they are out there. People also say that the Raquel Welch wigs are very natural.

I recently bought a lace front wig from A Plus Ozone which is a really inexpensive wig company. The wig was called "005". I bought it from gobunnys.com. The other one was from a site called Joshua24.com

I don't know if they ship to new zealand, but I'll leave the links.

So far, I've learned that a "mono top" and a lace front wig can look pretty natural. I'll eventually post pictures of my wigs. Good luck!

I've worn wigs on and off for the last 25 years and every day for the last 2-3 years. Concerning the itchiness, usually I never notice it any more. I think that maybe my scalp has adapted to the feel of the wigs over time. In the past, if the itchiness didn't go away after a couple of days I have sewn some comfortable fabric into the cap. Several times I bought some soft ribbon and sewed it over the scratchy areas. You could also buy a cotton turban or wig cap and sew it into the wig.

I really like Forever Young wigs, and even though I'm older, they are not old lady-ish. I have owned many of them and they usually are very good quality for the price. It usually helps to customize them a bit. I usually trim and thin the bangs, powder them to reduce excess shine, etc. If I look good I usually feel good.

I hope that you feel better soon

Thankyou for the tips that is really helpful :)

The least scratchy/itchy/uncomfy wigs I have found are totally hand tied ones. I also find that human hair feels better to me than synthetic does. But I still have both HH hand tied and synthetic hand tied - they serve different purposes for me. The HH is more work (maintenance/care etc) and the synthetic is good for when I don't have the time, energy and/or inclination to make a lot of effort!

So maybe you can find a fully hand tied one to try? They tend to be lighterweight too. I had a quick look on Google and there is a company called: Wigs by Haircreations and Hairtoday in NZ. They do synthetics, human hair and custom made wigs, as well as hair pieces. Also: The Wig Room, Splurgeville, House of Wigs have websites and are based in NZ. They all seemed to have some non-old lady styles.

I had a really bad experience hair creations who made me a topper that turned out very bad!! will try the others tho thanks
