Has anyone been diagnosed with both Poly-cystic Ovarian Syndrome and Alopecia? If so, what are you doing to control the PCOS, and once it is under control, is it possible that the hair will grown back in?

No diagnosis for me (yet?) on this, but I will be anxious to see your responses here.
Well I've had Alopecia since 2006, but only just been diagnosed with PCOS. The doctors kept telling me my Alopecia is not related to any specific condition, and that the other problems I was having weren't related to each other. I've been to 2 dermatologists, an immunologist, an endocrinologist, and 2 gynecologists. However, I needed a Health Certificate for work and saw a GP who said it must be PCOS. Ultrasound confirmed it. I have all the symptoms except hirsutism, and I actually had that as well before the onset of the Alopecia.

I'm taking Metformin, on a strict diet and exercise routine. I guess we just wait and see how it goes, cause there's no cure for either.

Let me know how it goes for you.
I was diagnosed with PCOS, hypothyroidism and alopecia all in the last 3 years but have been suffering with all three for many years. I am on Metform, Synthroid and birth control(for the PCOS). I have been having regular cycles so the metformin and pill are helping with that. But none of the medications have improved my alopecia.
Thanks Julie. I'm glad you've had success in some area. I hope the Metformin helps control the PCOS for me too. I guess that's the most important thing right now.
I have, and I am actively trying to conceive right now and it's IMPOSSIBLE!!! My frustration knows no bounds, but I persevere....

In terms of controlling the PCOS, I use metformin for the insulin resistance; however, the only other thing out there that controls PCOS is the Pill, which kinda negates the purpose for me trying to have kids. I've been hypothyroid since 2002, so I take Levoxyl (brand name only; no generics for me!) to control that. Again, frustrating!

From my research, the one (alopecia) has nothing to do with the other (PCOS), so not holding out much hope that the hair grows back. Now that summer has arrived in TN, I love my bald head more than ever because I'm staying much cooler than everyone out there with hair! :)
Just to give you some hope, my two cousins both have PCOS and one now has 2 children and the other has 1. I hope that the luck will be in your favor and that you will be able to conceive soon!!
Thanks. Your positivity is inspirational. I thought there might be a link between the two, but I guess I need to do what you're doing and focus on the PCOS and accept my head as it is.

As Julie said, I hope that things will work in your favour and that you'll conceive soon. I know it's frustrating. The thought alone is difficult for me.
If your looking for healing you might want to start with the way you digest food and possible extreme traumatic emotional and physical events that may have occurred in your life as the culprit or culprits behind your deseases. Bad digestion can mean bad absorbtion of valuable proteins, minerals and vitamins critical to your bodies balance well being, lack of critical enzymes and good bacteria within your intestinal tract can further prevent proper breakdown of food causing over time many symptoms which graduate into conditions and them full blown deseasesYour asking for help so I am giving mine for what it is worth I listen to a nutritional Dr. on the am dial his name is Dr. bob marshall he is a dr. of nutrition he is a natural QRA doctor (quantum reflex analisys doctor ) he may be able to help you in a less invassive way I have not personally gone to a clinic but have called for an appointment. google Dr. BOB marshall or quantum reflex analisys he has clinics all over the united states

Thank you. I already changed my diet, so I'm hoping it helps. I'll check out Dr. Marshall and see if there's anything there that can help me.
Thanks for posting your question. I used to have a few ovarian cysts, but no longer do, and still experience AA. Over the past year I have noticed that I usually loose a patch of hair just one week before my monthly cycle starts. I am wondering if there could be interference between the hormonal release at that time in my body with the proper function of the immune system. I am now 38 and have had AA since I was 12. Since my 30s, I have noticed an increase in the frequency of my hairloss. Has anyone had a similar experience?

I also have aga and pcos, both detreminting factors to hair growth, and I myself am also in my 30's and my hair loss seems to keep getting WORSE!!! It def sucks! I also have 2 children even tho I have pcos, toook me prob about 6 months to get preggers!!!! Best of luck!

I have a friend of mine who had PCOS and Hirustism, and I have hypothyroidism and alopecia universalis. My friend used to have an access of hair all over, back, legs, mustache, and went for laser hair removal regularly, never had a regular cycle, never became pregnant. Her and I used to compare notes and we realized both of us, although on the opposite side of the spectrum, had lots of similarities. The commonalty being the thyroid. Ive heard many studies suggest Iodine for PCOS will help. You may want to do some research on Idoral for PCOS and thyroid related disorders. As far as the AU, I strongly believe its more of a deeper systemic issue for all of us that we share in common. But I do believe that stem cell therapy may very soon be the answer for that.
