Bald-ish Maintenance
Hi All,
My 12 year old has been waiting for the last bits of her hair to fall out so she can be bald. She decided she wanted to be totally bald about a year ago. Since she still had a fairly large circle of growth at the top of her head, we told her she had to wait. We have now agreed that the time has come. On the last day of school, this June, she will shave off what is left and will spend the summer learning to maintain her patchiness. I don't want her to cut up her head. I don't know what a barber would charge either.
What do you all recommend my little girl use to maintain her bald?

Getting rid of patches of hair can be very refreshing and is one way for us to get over it. My only question is, why'd you wait so long if she decided a year ago? I shave my own head with the same types of razors you'd use to shave your legs with and cut myself a few times when I first started but now I get it done every few days in about 5 minutes. I don't know whether you'd want to take her to a barber a couple times per week or not but for the first time it might be useful as he/she would be able to give you some handy tips on how to do it at home. If she is 12 she should be able to handle this on her own if you both like, kids around her age are learning how to shave their legs so why not a head? Just remember that she's the one that has to deal with this primarily (I understand your concern) so she has to do what she feels is neccessary in order to cope. It is your job to stand by and support her anyway you can for those great and not so great "hair" days - like you would with any other thing a child does. Anyways, good luck and let us know what happens! :)

for about two months i would shave my head with a razor in the shower, i never cut my self but i also didnt use a sharp blade. i went to the barber to do it but i felt uncomfotable and i never let them do it. i might be good for you to shave it. of course she is comforable with you so that might be a good idea, like saturday morning mom daughter time
just sugesting. its not as scary as it seems. my mom was terrified when i did it.

Today is the big day!! Yesterday, on the last day of school, Grace was asked if she had anything exciting she was doing this summer by her teacher. She announced to her class that she was going to shave her head. They clapped for her and told her that she was awesome. We already knew that! :-)
Anyway, Grace and her dad are heading out later this morning to shave their heads. A little solidarity never hurts.

Hello Sarah I find it easier to shave myself than to have someone do it for me and I'm new to shaving my head, I went bald in April this year. I only have three very small spots to shave but I shave them everyday as I like the smooth feel and I don't like the feel of velcro :) I run a bath so my head has a chance to warm up and soften and then shave cream and the Gillette Power Fusion which vibrates and I use a new blade every week. I also take in a small mirror so I can see I have it all, but mostly you can feel the spots best. So I swipe with the razor then swipe with the other hand that still has shave cream on it, one hand, the other hand back and forth and both ways front and back. Like I said, I like it really smooth and I don't like to see the darkness of the patches. Then some moisturizer is nice after to soften that rubbery feeling. I'm Irish so my head is really really white, having never seen the sun before, so I also use a bronzer powder to even out the line between my tanned face and white head. I hope this helps and I'm sure your little girl is going to enjoy her new found freedom as it's really hard to take day after day when your hair is falling out, I know I don't start my day in tears anymore.

Thanks, Susan! :-) That's what I meant by maintenance. I needed to know what to tell her. For whatever reason, I couldn't equate shaving her quarter-sized growth patches to shaving her legs. We were looking at moisturizers, too. I don't want her skin to dry out or look chalky. We are going to get her a mirror to put in the shower. She's had constant loss since she was about three, so I really don't expect her to have to shave for very long. Of course, with alopecia, we never know what's going to happen! :-)

My daughter is a rockstar! She is SO happy to be fully bald. Thanks to everyone who responded. Today was a happy Bald Day!! :-)

So glad you all are enjoying it! I personally love HeadBlade razors and their HeadLube shaving gel/cream. I shave in the shower, rinse frequently, and change blades enough to keep them sharp. Headblades, with and without wheels, make it easy and even a little fun to shave. You can order them online and benefit Bald Girls Do Lunch, or buy them in some drugstores. Happy shaving to you all!
