I've always wanted to dye my hair, and since my hair has grown back and full (with the exception of a bald patch that is taking a little longer to grow back), so I've decided I want to dye my hair. I've never dyed my hair before, so I'm a little scared of how I'm going to react to the dye. I want to dye my hair red with blonde highlights, and i'll have to dye my hair first. I was thinking of maybe not dying my hair all the way to the roots, to avoid some irritation? Would this work or no?

Christina, I did not dye my hair before AA, but began doing it after it got bad, before this I would only have my hair highlighted, pulled through a cap, so none touched my head. I found that the coloring helped my hair look better, the lighter highlights just made it look thinner, I continued to whole head color my hair up until I buzzed the bits left. I found no ill effects from the color, and I know it did not cause the AA because I had it before. So many people color and foil their hair I've never heard of it causing AA, or making it worse, it certainly didn't in my case. Hope this helps. Let us know how it works for you if you do try.
Hi Christina,
As a hair stylist for many years I will tell you that you should do a skin test on your inner arm or behind your ear before you color. Technically we are required to do this with every client although I admit that never happens in the real world. But I have seen many clients that are allergic or become allergic and the reaction can be very severe. If AA is truly an immune response you could be reactive to chemicals also. I have Lupus which is also autoimmune, and am also allergic to many foods and other substances.
Also, the color you want should be done by isolating the blonde first(with foil or plastic) then applying the red around the highlights. It could also be accomplished by foiling the entire head and leaving some root area virgin, but not many stylists will do this. To do it by dying your hair red allover then bleaching is very damaging. This is a job for a good professional.
I have been able to color mine! They suggested to do highlights that way it does not touch the scalp like a full hair color would.
Hi! I'm still losing my hair, and so it hasn't really grown back yet, but I also want to dye my hair red (minus the blonde highlights)!
I was doing some research and I found that henna is a 100% natural way to dye hair and I believe its base color is red. Go to the www.hennaforhair.com website and click on "Mixes." You'll see that people make their own natural hair dye recipes using henna and other organic ingredients, like lemon juice and turmeric. You can do blonde, strawberry blonde, red, black, brown! The reds really come out nice and vivid. It's also known that henna is actually beneficial for those with hair loss and I've read that it can make your hair strands thicker and healthier. So I think it's the way to go for us. No chemicals!
Be very careful, much of the henna I have seen looks very off-color and unnatural, and I have found it to be drying to the hair. (30+ years hair stylist) Some people do have luck with products like henna but you must choose carefully.
