Hi Drew, I've been having the same problem, and I've just been trying to live with it. My spots are really well defined, and one is quite large, and both are extremely noticeable. I don't see any way short of wearing a hat to disguise it. My partner told me that it became less noticeable once the rest of my scalp got a bit of sun and the color evened out a bit. Nevertheless, it's still annoying. My patches have also been getting cold as the weather changes. I have a feeling it's going to be a long winter, and I intend to wear lots of hats to get through! Cheers, Scott
hmmm, i have considered using nair, or bleach on these spots, but a little bit cautious about that. have you tried anything like that before?
Don't use nair! It burns like hell!!!
First of all I want to say what you are making in the picture is totally awesome!!! You have dark hair obviously so it does make things a bit harder to hide. I'm finding that the bits of hair on me that are trying to grow back are darker than they once were, I was blond as a child and am now a brunette apparently but for me shaving once every 2 or 3 days seems to work out just fine without anything being too apparent. What kind of blade are you using? Are you shaving at the sink or in the shower? Have you ever tried getting your head shaved at the barber with a straight razor and a hot towel? I find that shaving my head in the shower works much better as the heat opens the pores so you can get a cleaner shave. Also you could try using a different razor, I just use cheap disposables but some people have tried the headblade and have had nothing but great experiences with it?? If you can't seem to hide the patches and it bothers you then a hat would help, at least when you're in public or outside of your comfort zone. Whatever you do, keep your chin up, you are very talented and capable of awesome things hair or no hair! :)
How do I get a horseshoe tree????
Thanks for complementing the horseshoe mushroom :). I don't particularly like caps as i think shaved head rocks! i use fusion 4 blades and shave wherever is convenient so most often post shower, anyhoo i personally reckon that head blade is overrated, but i dont think any type of shaving will hide the patches tbh, might try and find some dark cover up makeup next i think. As my girlfriend frequently puts some stuff on it to stop it causing dangerous glare!
this is an excellent discussion as I too have been wondering the same thing. I have dark hair patches showing up on a newly shaved white head LOL. I was going to make a venture out to the cosmetic counter and ask a beautician about maybe trying a tanning lotion, but not wanting to make my scalp any darker than the rest of my face. I will let you know what I find out.
cool, please do, obviously i will let you know how i get on too!
Hi Drew!

My hair has gotten darker as I've gotten older, but once it actually starts growing it lightens up again -- but since I keep my head shaved because of all the patches I do the following: 1. I use a Gillette Fusion Pro-Glide razor (love the 5-blade action!!) I just started using HeadBlade's Hair Slick shaving lotion -- and have gotten the smoothest shave ever!!! 2. I shave in the shower every 2nd or 3rd day -- any more frequently and my scalp gets very irritated. 3. When I put on my makeup, I use MAC's Blot Powder in Dark to get rid of the shine (and because my hair is dark, it evens out my super-white head with my stubble). I hope that helps you!!!
Hi Drew,
I also dealt with this alopecia issue along my journey.
I found that if I shaved my head daily or more often and had a good tan up top the spots were less noticeable.
Sorry for the late response on your discussion.
Jeffrey
I have bleached my hair (just prior to shaving) before job interviews and it did make the stubble less noticeable but I have sort of vowed never to do that again because I felt as though I was succumbing too much to the pressure of judgment from others. I use a Mach 3 razor which works better than any other razor I've tried so far. When I want a particularly smooth shave I will shave with the hairs first then against the hairs using my fingers to confirm that I have gotten all the stubble. Having a tan helps but us bald folk need to really be careful of sunburn. One day at work a co-worker mentioned that I missed a spot. I explained to him my condition and how it may look like I miss spots when shaving but it's really that the rest of my head is absolutely hairless. Later when I went home I used a couple of mirrors to see the back of my head and found that I had a shock of hair about 2 inches long growing at the base of my skull :) Apparently I had been missing a spot for quite a while.
Good question. Although i don't have a remedy, it is interesting to see how fellow alopecian minds think alike. I don't shave my head at the moment, but did for 3 years. I too always tried to get the closest shave i could, and tanned my dome. It masked it a little, but was still noticeable. For some reason after 3 years of shaving my hair grew back full and complete. I am curious about the horseshoe sculpture. looks cool. do you have other similiar works?
for me shaving in the shower and putting tan cream on works well for, in Winter especially with no sun my patches are much more noticeable
