I've been dealing with this problem for years, though I notice that it only affects certain fingers. I don't know about you, but at times its been a bit painful for me, especially when I bump one of those fingers. Usually, the nail falls off completely then grows back healthy and will stay that way for a little while before the cycle starts again. I've actually had to explain the whole process to my doctor who was very confused by the whole thing. If you think about it, nails are made of the same thing as hair, so it makes sense as to why some people have their nails affected. FYI, its always both my pinkies, ring finger and middle finger on my left hand....not sure why!
Yes, the same thing happened to me!! Exactly the way you described it. Over the past 3 years though, the white spots have disappeared and the lifting doesn't seem as bad. I have AU. Did you talk to your dr. yet?
My son lost all of his fingernails and then his toenails shortly after all of his hair fell out. After increasing his Biotin to 5000mcg a day they grew back and so far have stayed. His dermatologist wasn't sure if it was related to the Alopecia or the medication he was put on for his Ulcerative Colitis. But, since he's still on the medication (and the dosage has been increased twice) I'm assuming it was related to the alopecia.
Once my fingernails start growing past my finger and they start looking white, they end up like shedding and cracking and breaking. Thin layers will peel off and then they just bend and break off. Plus I have deep vertical lines going through my nails. I was told the lines going through them meant something, but Im not sure what. But I know they break and hurt a lot.
I've not had my fingernails lift but my toenails lift. My fingernails do break, split, peel and are terribly thin. After reading posts of Connie - Chris' Mom and also taking up the study of classical guitar (classical guitarists generally have right hands with fingernails), I became determined to keep my nails.

It's only been about 1 month or so, but I've been taking 5000 mcg daily plus coating the nails in Nail Envy AND being super SUPER HYPER careful to dry them carefully after washing and continually moisturizing with olive oil, shea butter or any natural hydrating oil. By this time of year, my nails are generally so thin and ripping apart but this year ... so far ... I am actually slowing growing the nails and they are NOT HURTING.

IF anything i think it could be the attention I'm giving them in terms of keeping them out of water and putting cream/oil on them all day and night long.

It might help your situation?
I used to have really thin nails that were so thin they could fold backwards. But, they never have lifted. But, I did start taking Vitamin D-3...5000IU for my hair..and now my nails are super nice! Sure, they still have weird lines..never had smooth nails. But they grow so darn fast and thick now. I've NEVER EVER had nice nails and I've had them since taking the vitamins.
