Hello, I have alopecia areata and have just started wearing a
hairpiece. Nobody has realised it is a wig, even my boyfriend
at first, everyone thinks I've just had my hair done and they all say
wow, your hair looks amazing! etc. Nobody knows I have alopecia
as I was covering it with scarves/hats before (big bald patch on crown
of head) I keep feeling guilty when people say how nice my hair
looks! One colleague said, "your hair looks lovely, it's a sign
you're happy!" I felt like I was lying to her because the truth is I'm
going bald and it's probably been caused by stress, and so I don't feel
very happy at all!
However I must say I love how the hairpiece looks and
I do feel much more confident with it on!

Wear it proudly.Alopecia is autoimmune and nobody really knows the trigger. So don't stress about being stressed. People stop my daughter in public and compliment her hair all the time. She says thanks.

Thank you! Sorry for delayed reply, I've had no internet for a week...

where did you get your hair piece ?

From Trendco in London UK (Notting Hill). Their head office is in Brighton and they have a few other branches in England.
Trendco specialises in wigs and hairpieces for alopecia and chemo patients.

I always feel the need to tell people that I'm wearing a wig when I get compliments. I was so against wigs and weaves when I had hair because I thought it made people look fake. Now look at me...God has some sense of humor. LOL, Now I could care less. I still get a little nervous about breaking out a new wig but after a few wears I get over it. I'd rather people knew that I have this autoimmune disease instead of them thinking I'm some typical, fake Cali girl. Sigh!!!

Glad you're now feeling more positive!

Don't feel guilty! Wear it proudly. Try to embrace it, and you will start feeling better about the hair loss. You aren't lying to anyone! You don't need to tell anyone if you don't feel like it. When a stranger compliments you, just say thank you, and walk away. Think about it this way... if a woman wears fake eyelashes, and someone says that she is beautiful, she doesn't tell them that she is wearing fake eyelashes! Women wear fake stuff all the time, and it is no ones business. If someone asks where you get your hair done, you can say that a member of your family did it! The longer you wear a piece, the better you will feel about it!

Thank you, that's a good point!

Cool. Thanks for sharing that. Just ordered my 1st well 2nd wig 2 days ago. The 1st one looked like one of The Beatles post 1960 and I threw it in the trash... Being that this is 2012 wigs have improved and I hope to Baby Jesus I like it. Thanks for the vote on a wig. I have the same type of alopecia I have an amazing ring of hair and then very, very see thru up top. So, busting out the clippers tomorrow and away with the hair I go.- Kiki.

Go for it Kiki!

Hallo MissLals,

I think , it is good, the people do not gess it is a wig.
Mostly people do not understand I wear a wig too.
I prefer not to tell my friends also. If they do not see me for along time, they also do not gess it is a wig. My hair is growing up, I hope I do not need a wig in summer. I hope , you will not need a wig too.
Try to be happy, it will help your hair to grow up !

I have always had fine hair and the hairpiece covers up (and much improves) the bits of my hair that I hated my whole life anyway - way before my alopecia!
I also have my eye on a beautiful long blonde wig, I'm saving up for it...
