Hello!

I agree with you Cindy "my feeling is that alopecia is internal" and hair dye will not make a difference. I did ask my doctor before I went back to high lighting my hair and she said - it's an autoimmune condition and go ahead a color it, especially if it will make you feel better!! So I did and have for a while and no changes with the AA. I do think more natural like henna or organic colors may be more gentle and healthier for the condition of your hair.... BUT if you want to go blonde they will not work. At least that was my experience! A coworker of mine uses a henna color- her hair is a deep auburn...and it looks beautiful! :)

Thank you to all the replies bc my doctor told me i cant dye or use any chemicals in my hair or any heat to it so thinks so much.

Hi Sonia,

My Derm explained it like this...AA is internal so adding dye to your hair is fine!

Thanks for the reply. I did dye my hair and i feel so much better, need to do it again. Trying to find organic dye but having hard time finding it.

I used henna about 5 weeks ago. I did not use heat. Just left it on according to the directions, covered it with a plastic cap and then a towel. Basically my aim was to cover up all the white hairs from all the new growth. It did an awesome job. I am so pleased and the color really hasn't faded that much. Probably in a couple of weeks I'll do it again, after getting a haircut. I used http://www.light-mountain-hair-color.com/. Whole Foods carries it and other health food stores. My hair is SO soft.

I also had asked my dermatologist about hair dye and she said it was fine. I just wanted to go the healthiest route. My hair will feel better in the long run by using henna. I've had my hair colored in the past and it's ok...but hard on the hair after a while.

I was lookng for henna but could not find it. I heard alot about it. Did u get it online or a store?

Hello Sonia,

I use Loreal glossing. It's a semi permanent dye and is very gentle on the hair and scalp because it doesn't contain bleach but it only lasts for about 4 weeks. Sometimes my scalp can be a bit itchy and sore so I never use dye around this time; I wait until my hair feels strong and my scalp is healthy enough. Once I had my hair bleached a few shades lighter in a salon and it made my hair condition poor and very dry and it began to fall out more than usual. I would advise that you don't go too far from your natural shade as this tends to strip away from the hair. The good thing about the glossing is that it is said to add to the hair and it is very shiny afterwards. The condition of my hair seemed to improve.

Funny, I never dyed my whole head until after my AA, Prior to this I was a blond, and like most blonds as we age our hair darkens, the only thing I ever did was highlight, through the cap type, which doesn't allow product to reach scalp, my hairdresser suggested I go to a darker shade and stop the highlighting, not because it was bad for my hair, but because she felt that it was actually making my hair appear thinner, she was right, I use a lightest golden brown, which imparts a reddish soft brown to my hair, it is the best color ever, my green eyes pop, my skin color is better, less washed out, and my hair comes away with a thicker better texture every time I color. I have never been happier with my hair (when its all here) So in conclusion, I would not be afraid of color, it may even help the appearance of your hair, and make you feel better, Good luck, Christine
