Hi there,
I am a 42 year old female with chronic alopecia areata (about 30-40% hair loss, fluctuating losses for 30 years). I've given up on the medical treatments. I am wondering if anyone out there has ever tried hair extensions on hair surrounding patches to "fill-in", and create a fuller head of hair. Also wondering if anyone has tried 'Hair Club'--hair replacement system. I'd love to hear your thoughts, solutions, and experiences. I live I the San Francisco Bay Area. Thanks. I'm so grateful to have found this website! Thanks.

Hi
I feel the fist thing you must do is work out your own needs. What are the things you need from alternative hair.

I would suggest you write a wish list of what you need from a hair and then find an alternative that works well for you.

There are many alternatives available, part pieces, full pieces, processed hair pieces, net based wigs, combination net and silicone, full vacuum wigs, synthetic hair, 100% unprocessed human hair. Investigate all the options and see what will work for you the best. Do your homework and don't rush into anything ...take your time.

My personal opinion on using extensions with alopecia areata is that you may not achieve the result you really want...patches move and change all the time ....be thoughtful on this choice as it may be expensive and you may not get the result you need.

Good luck with your investigations.

Rosy
I agree with Rosy, I thought about the extension options too, but because of the random patches that can move around this really wasn't an option at all. I had my greatest loss at the.lower sections of my head for years, and covered it pretty well for a long time with my upper hair, until I began losing hair on the top of my head. Some who have more of a female pattern hair loss or androgenic alopecia can do well with a topper, I suggest reading some reviews of hair club, I did and realized this was a very expensive option, check out the reviews online, but be mindful that there are false positive review on some sites managed by the companies themselves. I would suggest seeking out a salon in your area that carries wigs and other solutions that's what I did and found a good solution for me. I hope this helps, in the end you will find something that makes you comfortable, and feel good about yourself.

How do I research part pieces? I have pure white regrowth and now that my loss and subsequent regrowth spread to the very top of my head, I look skunkish when I don't dye every two weeks. Is there a part piece I can wear to extend my time between hair dying?

Thank you Rose Marie and Christine for your thoughtful replies. I actually met a hairstylist who works with extensions and is beginning to specialize in hair loss. I've had some extensions attached to areas of hair that have not fallen out. Yes, there is a risk that I might lose some hair and extensions but I have very stubborn patches and few changes. The extensions were attached with very fine keratin bonds and strategically placed above the stubborn patches. I now have so much more hair to work with and the weight of the bonds and the new hair tends to cover up the lower patches really well. I'm actually really pleased with the results. I wanted to try something different before going for the wig option. So far so good.

I wear a wigpro top piece...it's cut and blended with what i have left of real hair. I have been wearing top pieces for 5 years now. I truely am so thankful for them because I am active..I cant imagine wearing a wig while dancing and jumping around...it also looks and feels natural.

Hair Club for Men has a website that is replete with horror stories. And, for me, personally, I think it is rather unhealthy to glue anything to your head.

Possibly the advice contained in this song won't sit well with you, but at least the music will hopefully cheer your day.

Ivan - thanks for the tune. It's always been one of my favorites! I could "tape" flowers to my head and that just might solve all my woes ;-)

I've had very, very thin hair since the age of 14. Falling out, coming back, you know the usual cycle.

When I began looking into hair systems, I went to a professional (20 years ago) and spent over $1,000.00 on a custom made hairpiece that never looked right. Even after they thinned it out, it still looked like a big cat on my head.

I'm new on here, so I don't know if there are pictures of you on here or not.

With very little hair, I bought the clip-in human hair extensions (Raquel Welch) and I have NEVER had a question that it is my hair. Much cheaper and looked totally natural. Another thing to do is look up the falls attached to a nice headband (not those awful stretchy ones). Those can look nice. Finally, I found in a mall a place called Soho that had the most wonderful hairpieces. You just put your hair up, wrap it around the ponytail and use some bobby pins and...instant hair. All of these have held me steady for a long time. I also have never had the embarassment of them falling out.

Right now, I'm going through major shedding and I don't feel like doing anything with my hair but letting it breathe now. 3rd haircut in 6 weeks.

I hope I've helped. Let me know if there's any other questions I can help you with.

All my best,
Tovah

Thanks Tovah,
I'd love to know the brand name of those hair pieces. Sorry to hear about the major shedding. Thank you for being helpful!

Hi Claire,

I know that I bought the Raquel Welch extensions from Wigs.com, where I've also bought some really nice falls and easy put-on pieces. I bought the 'easihair'Impulsive which is synthetic hair attached to a nice headband. I found it heavy, though it stayed on really well, but my husband loved it. lol. Wigs.com are very nice to work with and their quality is really good. I've also bought some cheapies from 'Put on Pieces" which I liked also.

The other place I've ordered from is vogue wigs. They have some of the most modern and fun pieces. Also good people to order from.

Just a sidenote, I've always had to have any of the grips be very tiny spaced because of how thin my hair is, so be careful when you order that the clips aren't too big. I hate the jaw clips; painful and they seem to need more hair.

I hope this has helped a little bit. Don't forget to check out coupon codes and sales at these places.

Thank you for your thoughts on my shedding. I keep touching my scalp, probably taking out even more hair. lol

Let me know if I can help in any other way.

Tovah

I wear a hair-replacement system that is bonded-on, it will never be the same as having my own hair, and it's really expensive, but it's the best thing I can thing of to feel semi ok with this shit sandwich fate has dealt me, sorry I'm in a bummer mood right now, I'm usually more upbeat. If you have any questions about my system let me know.
