Our family is planning a trip to Walt Disney World for June 2010. My oldest daughter was diagnosed with Alopeica in June of 2009 and my youngest was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in June of 2007 so this trip is a way to celebrate our strength as a family and their strength and bravery having to deal with their auto-immune diseases. My oldest daughter in the last two months has lost all of her hair and eyebrows completely and her eyelashes are thinning. She currently wears a wig (human hair), a hat or other head covering (buffs, etc), or goes without(only in front of close family and friends). My girls are so excited about Disney and they really want to experience the Bibbity Bobbity boutique. They want to experience being made over to look just like one of the princesses. Have anyone of you (or your daughter) experienced this? I'm not sure whether to buy one of the "character" wigs at the boutique or to have them style her own wig. I'm curious, has anyone else done this at WDW? What was your experience like at WDW?

I haven't done this but I would just get one of the character wigs because if the people there aren't used to dealing with wigs they could damage her good one in some way through their lack of knowledge. I have been to WDW and all I will say is that you might want to look at some way of securing the wig for rides like wig tape, or if she is comfortable with it just walking around with a head scarf or bandana because most rides won't let you wear a hat. Speaking from personal experience it can be really stressful and worrisome so if you get a plan in place ahead of time it will make it a lot easier and stress free for her.
I was just there early in December and I went on all the rides. I just tied a large kerchief over my wig after I was seated on the ride and held onto it during the wild rides. On cooler days, I wore a tight beenie, and no one asked me to take it off. I think they just don't want you to ride wearing baseball caps that easily fly off (which could be extremely dangerous, especially on rides like the Aerosmith Rockin' Rollercoaster).
I'm a Girl Scout Troop Leader out of Lakeland Fla, There is a little girl in my troop who was Alopecia along with me. With our cookie money they decided that they wanted to go to Bibbity Bobbity boutique this past Summer. I called Them and told them that one of my girls had this condition. So when we got there they let her pick out a Character Wig at no cost and she was able to have it styled and it also came with a crown!! They were so helpful and made her feel just like a PRINCESS!!! If you already made reservations call them up and explain it to them and once again when it time for the special day!! I hope all goes well with this exciting trip for your family!!! After all Disney is a place where Dreams Come TRUE!!

That's really wonderful, Jennifer. The pictures are great!

Ronda, I don't have any advice regarding WDW, but I wanted to say hello since I have also have 2 daughters, but the autoimmune disorders have only affected my younger one who has both Type 1 diabetes and alopecia. The diabetes was diagnosed at 10 months, and the alopecia in 3rd grade. Kait is 19 now, just got her first wig and is heading to college! Time sure does fly. Have a great time in Florida.
Lisa,
Time does fly by. How is your daughter handling Alopeica and Diabetes at college? My daughter,Gwen is going to be nine years old and just got her first wig, but it's a petite adult wig that has been tacked in a few spots to fit her right now while we wait for her customized wig to arrive. This one that we have right now is not the most comfortable....we actually told her that she is going to take a break from it for a few days because she has two big blisters (one behind each ear)...ouch. Alopecia and Diabetes....that had to be tough. My youngest daughter, Olivia, will be five years old next month and she is my Type 1 diabetic. She was diagnosed in June of 2007. I completely understand!
Thanks Jennifer for telling me about your great experience at the Bibbity Bobbity Boutique. I was able to talk to one of the Fairy Godmother's In Training that works at the boutique and they also said that they have character wigs for all seven princesses. I made the reservations and both my girls are excited (I'm excited about going to WDW too)! I'll have to posts pics after our adventure. It will be my family's first time at Disney...going in June 2010. Thanks for posting pics too....they made my girls even more excited!! They are beautiful princesses!
Call down to Disney and ask! It doesn't hurt to ask and it doesn't hurt to see if any of their staff has experience with Alopecia. You want to prep the staff for your daughter coming. I'd inquire now and then again immediately before your trip down there.

I always call the salon where my KJ gets her hair cut to prep them that she is coming in and make sure that they schedule her trims with somebody who has experience cutting Alopecia Areata hair. good luck! Please keep us posted on how it all turns out. My kids LOVE Disney and I anticipate us going again in the next few years.
Have you talked to WDW about this? We just booked a trip down also in June 2010 and my daughter's hair is only about 10% there right now. I know the BBB sounds like a place she will want to go! I'd love to know if you talked to WDW and what they suggested! Thanks!
We talked with a "fairy godmother" that works at the BBB (emailed back and forth on the Disney Forums) and she told me that they sell character wigs for all seven princesses. She also told me that they have had experience with children with hair loss through the "Make a Wish" foundation. She told me that they really can't style those character wigs. My daughter wants to be Pocohantas, Mulan, Jazmine, or the Princess from the Princess and the Frog. She doesn't like the character wigs from Disney because the colors are too bright. Cinderella is yellow and Ariel's is just too red. We decided that we would take her customized wig and they can attach the crown and dust with "Pixy Dust", but the more I think about it...I don't want alot of product in her wig(in fear of it getting ruined) so I did some investigating on Ebay...and found these princess type wigs that are already styled with all or part of the hair in an "up do". They were only going for eleven dollars so I bought a black one and it is so cute and she loves it. Ofcourse she wouldn't want to wear it all the time because it's not the most comforable, but she is only going to wear it during the BBB experience, the photo session, and the character lunch that we have reservations for at the castle afterwards. I will definitely journal about the experience and take pictures. I might even get on ebay and buy the blonde and brown wigs too.
how was the trip? Did you do the boutique? We just got back last week and we did not do the boutique. Kayla did get fairy dust though from one of the employees at the Boutique in downtown Disney.
