Hi Guys, I have alopecia areata, I shave my hair with clippers to take control and more comfort wearing a wig. If I was bald I would go out uncovered, however, with very dark thick hair where it hasn't fallen out, even if I shave really close (which really hurts) I still look like I have mixamotosis. Do some of you still go out like this, what is the reaction you get? With the warmer weather coming I'm already finding the wigs/hats a pain. Thanks.

Try the halo head pieces that you can wear with as many cool fun hats you can find or own. You can order them on line or go into any wig shop and they will be able to hook you up. They are great when you don't feel like putting on the whole wig. You can even wear them with scarfs! Good luck.
Hi Sam,

I too struggle with this. I was almost AU a year or so ago and I used to go out bald sometimes. Now, I have a lot of regrowth and you can see the patches even when it's freshly shaved. (And I have red hair, not dark but I think it shows so much because I am so fair skinned). So I haven't been out without anything on my head for a while, because I am not that comfortable with the way my head looks. I have been experimenting with some new head scarves though.

But today, I saw a lady in the city who clearly had AA and had a closely shaved but still patchy head. And you know what, she looked great! She still had eyebrows and lashes though which I think helps a lot with the bald look. I wanted to say something to her but didn't know how to go about it. So as long as you're comfortable, I say go for it!
Hi,

Sometimes I wish I did have patches because I wonder if maybe then people wouldn't assume I have cancer when they see my bald head. I think if I do grow back patches, I'll just shave it close and keep going out as I am. I have a T-shirt that says "Yes, I'm bald...get over it!" I refuse to be physically miserable, and whether I'm bald or patchy...this is me now.

Please check out the National Bald Out Group if you haven't.... We need to raise awareness. If there were more patchy as well as bald heads out there, it probably wouldn't be such a big deal to non-Alopecians.

All the best,
Mary
Thanks guys. I did go out today to our local for lunch. Lots of stares but then as Daniel says it is a shock. It's the people who continue to stare even when you're looking at then that are difficult to deal with. I'm sure I'll get used to it the more I do it. Work the next step.
I KNOW HOW TOY FEEL, THINKING OF SHAVING THE REMAINING OF MY HAIR OFF BUT I'M WORRIED ABOUT PEOPLES REACTIONS !
