Just looking through the photos I notice several people showing their alopecia began at the back of the head above the neck. This was the case for me and now for my daughter who has it. Is this the most common place for it to start? If so, I wonder why? Any thoughts? Where did your's start?

Hey Sam, mine started at the back of my neck as well quarter size patches then moved around to the sides also above the ears for a complete strip around the sides and back of my head, I also had bare patches here and there on the front and top of my head. My dermitalagist told me that the longer the period of hair loss at the back of the head the poorer the prognosis and I guess she was right because I'm totally bald now. I'm really sorry to hear that your daughter has this too :(
Mine is not areata, but all over, though it definitely seemed thinner on the upper sides and the crown.
Mine started on the top left corner of the back of my head, then shortly thereafter the right side and then the middle ... and then all hell broke lose!
Same for me...quarter-sized patches at the back of my head/nape of my neck, then moving to the sides above the ears. I knew I was heading (lol) for total loss when I started getting bald spots on the top or near the top. No idea why....Good luck to you and your daughter.
Mine started with a quarter size spot on the right side of my head over my ear.
To be honest I think mine actually started at least 10 years earlier when I started losing the hair on my legs below the knee. I just assumed it was caused by my socks.
Its a year today. and looking back i can't remember if i had this before. But mine started smack in the middle of my head and creep to the front in a very fast pace. then the rest of the spots joined in the fun. i think i have about 50% left on my head, but i lost most of the hair in my nose and ears i also have patches everywhere else.
Thanks guys, there does seem to be a small trend for the back of the head/neck but nothing definite!

Thanks for the wishes for my daughter, she's 14 and struggling a bit as the patch is getting bigger!
When I began losing my hair in 1979 I also began losing in the back of my head just above my neck. This was quite hard by 8th grade the kids were relentless and my new nik name was "Neck" and they would slap my neck all the time.
Back of the head is where mine started way back in 1971. It did it's areata thing until the mid 1980s when it went universalis. Never had to suffer the indignity of gray hairs. ;)
Also, started with nape/neck area, almost completely totalis now. Tried cordisoid creams, injections, DPCP. Injections stopped working; DPCP produced 75% re-growth, behind ears & lower part of head barely any growth....but then the beginning re-growth started to fall out no more hair....other areas continued it's path so after almost a yr. with DPCP gave up. Gonna give natural oil mix a chance. Meanwhile I keep shaving what's left. Female/21 yrs. old and two yrs. w/alopecia. :(
