Hi! My name id Sierra and I have had alopecia universalis since I was a young girl, and now I am 21, so I've lived with alopecia the majority of my life. Well, to make things sweet and short, I applied for a wig through Locks of Love when I hit 9th grade of high school, and fortunately enough, I was accepted for my firs hairpiece. Since then, I have had 4 hairpieces from LOL and I am currently on my final wig from LOL. The age limit is 21 and so last year I aged out (but I don't hold any negativity against them whatsoever as I was very blessed to receive wigs from them and it changed my life). Well, this one now is cracling, balding, getting old, "dying" as I like to call it as it is way over its 18 months expiration date, and I have been trying to take care of it as best as I can. At the same time, I am trying to find another organization, in Michigan or one from another state that reaches out to other states, that can help me in the process of getting another wig. The hard part is is that I live alone and am very low income, which is limited. And it's nearly impossible to find another human hair wig that isn't $5,000 or more and I could never afford to even do a payment plan or get help from my insurance company. I'm reaching out to hopefully find help in hopes of finding another organization like LOL or even maybe help in finding financial help in getting another human hair wig.

It's not that I'm not accepting of my alopecia or uncomfortable with it. I don't know how else to explain it, but it makes me feel wonderful to have hair again, even if it is in the form of a wig. And I am scared to one day never have a wig again, and I have tried synthetic wigs but my skin is sensitive and my scalp gets dry or rashes up. I really hope this doesn't offend anyone either. But any help will be appreciated. Thank you!

Paula Young has inexpensive wigs.  Some even Human Hair for a very low price.  I have worn them for the last 7 years.  I did spring for a Freedom Wig 9 months ago.  Yes it was $4,000.

I wore the synthetic wigs from PW.  They last quite a long time and look very nice.  I got a new catalog today as a matter of fact.

Oh my, PY has styles that are way too old for her!!  They mostly have wigs for way older women....not someone 21 yrs. old.....Most are too old for me!!!  LOL

Yea I have heard of PY and FW however PY does have older hairstyles and FW is outrageously expensive. Hence why Im looking for informstion about organizations that help adults like how LOL or CWHL do.
Hi Sierra!

Here's a link to my online store. I offer affordable human hair wigs (and synthetic wigs) what style are you looking for. Short, long, straight, curly? Check this human hair wig out. Let me know what you think.

Its abeautiful wig, but that price is one full paycheck for me unfortunately

suggestion:
SAVE for your wig...a little here and a little there until you gather enough to get what you want...get a pretty jar and drop in $2.00, $5.00, $1.00--before you know it, you'll have enough saved to get a beautiful affordable wig.

just a suggestion.
Let me know if you'd be interested in any one of my wigs.

Peace.

Well that's hard when any money leftover from my paycheck goes towards gas for getting to and from work and doctor appointments. Again, very low income. I pay all my own bills on a very limited income.

And i dont feel guilty for wearing wigs though. I am very comfortable with my alopecia, people know and always ask me questions. But how having hair makes me feel is hard for me to explain. Im not saying I feel normal when I have hair, but I enjoy getting up and looking forward to styling my hair and doing different styles with it.

I don't know of any organizations, but I think this is a very important topic. Here are my initial thoughts:
1. Try calling Locks of Love to ask them about any orgs with which they're associated or acquainted for adults.
2. Try calling local cancer societies for the same info. I know you don't have cancer -- thank God -- but there may be a kind soul out there who would e willing to put you on a payment plan.
3. Same with all wigmakers. Tell the your situation. You'll get a lot of "no"s, but there are some really kind people out there who may be able to help you out.
4. When wearing synthetic wigs, wear a cotton wig cap and/or a wig liner. That should reduce your skin's sensitivity. Also moisturize your scalp, that may help as well.

I'm going to keep thinking about this. There really should an organization to help adults with limited financial means get hair.

I have called LOL and the only organization similar to LOL is 5 hours away, and stil, I cant do payment plans as I have other bills that come first and I can't afford even a 100$+ wig even if it is synthetic one. And i also try and keep my scalp moisturized but my skin is very oily as well and anything ive used breaks my scalp out worse than normal. I just wish there was an organization like LOL that helps adults. When i say Im very low income, Im very lowlow. I live paycheck to paycheck even to get by and scrape money to save.

Hi again Sierra!
Check these wigs out. They start from $39+
