When I first lost my hair, I was on a medical leave and the hair loss was something totally seperate that happened. When I returned to work which was on cruise ship.. it was so uncomfortable. I had to share a cabin with a co-worker so keeping my hairloss private wasn't so private.

Wearing wigs to work for over 8 hours made my head itch. I'm new to wigs and yeah, I've bought some really crappy ones and believed in people who only wanted to sell me anything to make money. I think wasting thousands of dollars on hair is just so wrong!! You're sick, can't help it and everyone just sees you as a dollar sign when you walk into their place.

It seems it happens to many that's true. Besides my AA I also have Celiac Disease, have you ever bought Gluten Free food lets' talk about expensive. My food bill of often twice of what it could be if I weren't Celiac and then my hair loss lots of wigs five right now. All itch all are uncomfortable and no I can't afford an expensive one either.

So I feel your pain its awful what others try to take advantage of.

Wel, wen i got my wig for the first time, i also didnt knew how to pick the rite wig. i just picked an awkward long haired one coz i thought thats the only kind of wig v can get. I noticed that it wasnt lookin natural at all. It made me look like a witch!!! So, as i browsed the internet , i saw lot of natural lookin wigs. I imagined myself in diff. hairstyle & came to the conclusion that short wavy hair suits me. Then, i looked for a gud shop which sold natural wigs. Luckily, i found one & i went there with a special appt. I tried MANY wigs & then liked the one i m wearing now. Its a bit expensive but, worth it!!!!
So, i guess everyone's first exprience is always a bad one. V tend to buy wat v dont really like but, think its the only option. Some shops just want to sell their products so they wil lie to u that u r lookin gr8, etc.
So, just trust ur own & ur luved ones judgement & buy an appropriate wig for urself.
I just go to work with a bandanna. Screw it if I have to work 8 hours in a nursing home, I am sure going to make sure I'm comfortable doing it.
Hi Char, I guess everyone is in their own comfort level with alopecia and headwear. I also wear a bandana and a casual cap on top. I've been comfortable with it for decades and probably because I'm kind of a casual type person, so it doesn't matter. If I were in the business of being in an office or coming together with a group, then I guess wigs might be where to go.
Last time I checked, i wasn't sick, i just had alopecia ;)

Hi, I've had alopecia for a total of 30 yrs. First at 10, got iron injections then hair came back in spots. In and out was the case even in college. I had spots and big bald spaces near my ears and back of my head. I was learning tennis, wore a hat and was accepted. Ran track and wore baseball caps and it was all good. Was a sportswriter and so happen I liked that athletic lifestyle and that was good. But when I graduated and went to job interviews for advertising, I wore a scarf & hat and it wasn't acceptable. Got job at an office and wore scarf and the ladies were constantly whispering and asking me about the scarf. I'd tell them I was allergic to pollen in the air and all sorts of stuff. Eventually they got used to seeing me in the scarf. Delivered college newspapers so hat/scarf was good. At times I'd go to doctor, but it was the same ole remedies so I got disgusted. Met husband and had hair then except for quarter patches so it was ok. He accepted that. Had one son still having quarter patches and then expecting twin boys, all my hair came out and never came back. I started with the scarf and husband never said anything. I went back to work but when I was laid off I was scared as to what job I would be able to get. Got a messenger job and then later went on line and a lady from England told me that she cleaned pubs. She suggest I start my own cleaning service. I did that and have been cleaning for 7 years now. One of my twin sons helps me and with cleaning, it doesn't matter so I'm comfortable. Guess you just have to find a job that you're comfortable at with wearing a scarf and /hat. I know it's hard.
Hi Mary, I've had alopecia for a long time and I never got to the point of wearing a wig. My mother always suggested that I get one instead of wearing a bandanna, but frankly I think the wig would change my looks more than the bandanna so I can't say how a wig would feel. I live the lifestyle of an athletic, very casual type person and it doesn't matter if I wear a scarf/bandanna. I am a residential cleaner and it would look kind of weird and overdressed with me wearing a wig so I am grateful for that, but if you want to be a social worker and the wig itches, create a brand for yourself that after a while everyone gets used to seeing you in a scarf/bandana and you can go on and feel comfortable while working.
I was ver moved by all the comments that you got here. That I showed my co-workers a picture of me and I explained to them one by one whats going on un my life and i may decide to take my wig off one day. The response was amazing!! We still love you and we suppourt you i was almost in tear and they were too>
