I have received a lot of interest from others on here in my involvement with the Xeljanz trials at Yale.

I thought it would be nice for everyone if I documented my progress on here.

Xeljanz is a Jak3 inhibitor and is believed to work with alopecia by turning off the distress signal relayed by the hair follicle to the attacking immune system which is the cause of the hairs falling out. Xeljanz comes in a strength of 5mg per pill and a full box contains 60 tablets. The recommended dosage for arthritis is 1 tablet in the morning and another in the evening each day.

The trial is set in a series of stages and there are requirements before participating. These include monthly visits and blood tests every 2 weeks. Dr Brett King is absolutely fantastic and is an inspiration to me. His positivity and enthusiasm gives me the much needed hope I have craved for over a decade. I have been put on a low dose to start with which is 1 tablet every other day. My dosage has now been increased to 1 tablet every day and next month it could be increased to 2 tablets per day depending on the results.

I have completed my first month and have already noticed my alopecia has stabilised . I have not lost any existing hairs. In addition to this I have seen little hairs growing in my chest area as well as eyebrows. Fingers crossed! To date, I have experienced no side effects.

Spoke to my derm yesterday. She said that in clinical trials, people on higher dosage have been showing faster results than people on 2 per day. Not sure how to reconcile that with the hair cycle info but if what my derm said is true, not sure that variations in results between people is solely due to timing.

I've been on 2 per day for last 5 weeks and don't think I've seen any definitive results (I'm AA so harder for me to tell what's new vs what's been there).

@football fan

It would be very difficult to say but I would stick with 3 pills a day for at a least a few months and see how things go. It will suddenly take off when you least expect it.

Do you have any vellus growth at all?

Just completed day 1 on xeljanz
Hi ADML Some vellus hair on my arms and legs nothing on my head yet (still have some hair there)that I can see.Wonder how long this early stage telegen will last! If it's just a waiting game I will wait it out but 3 pills a day will get expensive fast.Wonder if I do 3 every other day I will get the same results(cost). At least I know now this drug will eventually work on me!Now to make it affordable for everyone! Will show all these new findings to my Doctor.Good Luck to everyone.

Hi football,

I can fully understand the cost issues and seeing very little results so far. It's really frustrating !

It would be best to keep taking the tablets as often as possible while you are regrowing. It looks like it will be a slow process for you unfortunately but you will definitely get there. 2 Pills a day is far better than nothing at all.  The fact you have vellus hairs on your arms and legs is a great sign Xeljanz is working for you .

The increased dose may be helpful even for a short time to increase immune suppression and  possibly allow your hair follicles to enter the anagen phase sooner.

keep at it , your on your way to hair ;)

:)

Congratulations! Keep us posted!

COBGRATULATIONS for finally getting started. Wish you the best!
ADML, how long did it take for all of your hair to turn pigmented. I finally have hair on most of my scalp but it is snow white exceot for dark patches of hair on the back and left side. It is growing nicely and appears to be terminal hair, but no color.
Thats fantastic Starshine . I know of a number of cases when someone would grow back white terminal hair on Xeljanz. This will go darker/blonde in time.

My hair started as vellus and was already pigmented when the hairs became terminal.
I have my first appointment with Dr.King tomorrow. Its gonna be a long flight from dallas lol. Im rly excited about starting xeljanz soon. How long does it usually take to get xeljanz after the first appointment with dr.king?
Keep us updated mate :) I have been on xeljanz 3 weeks now, and it takes about a week depending on which pharmacy you use
