True enough. The drs and researchers don't know enough about the immune system and why it gets "confused" when it comes to alopecia. I gave up on the doctors too, nothing can be done. However, if the nails are affected, mine came back nicely with Biotin (see the Fingernails forum for more info on this).

Thanks, for your comments. I think that's exactly what we decided to do...go this one more time, and if the doctor doesn't really have anything more to offer then we will not continue to go back every six months for him to look at him and say - yep, he still has no hair. :) Destin obviously doesn't know any difference, and we aren't upset about his having AU, knowing his future is in God's hands anyways. We're gonna teach him to embrace the way he was made! :) I figure once he gets older if he wants us to seek treatments, then we may start going back. Thanks again for your comments and compliment!

I stopped taking my 11 year old son to the Doctor after we had tried many different treatments trying to have his hair grow back. We spent a lot of money and nothing worked. I would have kept going to the Doctor but my son said he had had enough. The call is yours to make about going to see the Dermatologist but I would go at least one more time and see what options the Doctor gives you. Good luck.

Hi everyone! I'm new to this site. I have a 2 year old son with AU. He lost all his hair when he was about 10 mos old and was officially diagnosed around 18 mos when we had a dermatologist appointment. The derm told us to get a thyroid test and wanted to see us back in 6 mos, but didn't do much more than look at him and confirm he had AU. The thyroid test came back normal. Today is our follow-up derm appointment, and we are wondering if it is necessary to go. I can't find any info on here from people who just live with their alopecia and don't go to the doctor, since there doesn't seem to be much they can do (especially for a 2yr old). Any thoughts on going or not going would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! ~Mimi

it seems doctors don't know much about our condition at all..lets face it people we are just hairless..nuff said..lets get on with the living.."I also would like a cure, but since its not a killer I don't dwell on it n e more. Yes its tough,no doubt.
I feel for the children who aquire it..Other children can be sooo cruel, heck society in general can be cruel, makes us stronger though doesn,t it? Take care and God Bless Us All..Sherry
