I do feel better being gluten free.  I have FFA so my body is attacking my hair follicles. I read that the body may attack a protein in wheat mistaking it for another protein. In any event, internally my body feels clearer and cleaner somehow so I am sticking with the gluten free.  Not sure if it helps hair but I am sticking with it.

I have been gluten-free since the day after Labor Day. I don't have any growth just yet. I have been dairy free for about three weeks. I also cut out eggs and other autoimmune triggers.

I hope it helps. Seems to be taking awhile to see results. Alopecia Universalis - 10 years.

Is anyone reading these posts and interested in starting this back up? I have FFA and started a gluten free diet and milk free diet about a month ago. I believe this is helping!

Chris, that's great news and very encouraging!  Thanks for sharing, and I hope you continue to be successful in preventing further hair loss!!

I have frontal fibrosing alopecia. I get red bumps and inflammations around the hair follicles, which scars them, so the hair can't grow back. I went gluten free about 4 months ago, and the inflammations have gone away almost completely. I won't ever get back the hair I lost, but I'm hoping to stop my receding hairline. This is the first time I've seen improvement in the inflammations in two years.

Has anyone tried Rob Swierski's diet ? What has your experience been ? I have just discovered his site and am interested in his experience .

Good for you, Dana! I totally believe in that approach. My son has white fuzz, but we just can't get over the hump of the hair developing further. I suspect when he gets older and chooses to eat much better than he does now, his hair will have a fighting chance. I just hope the follicles won't be too damaged. It's a challenge to get him to eat more fruits and vegetables, but as he gets older, he is making changes. He is six now.

I've had alopecia universalis since Dec 2012 when I lost 90% of my hair within 2 weeks. I initially went with a western approach to treating my AU but quickly became frustrated by the list of prescription drugs that I was given to treat the symptoms of alopecia and inflammation but not the source. I also hated the side effects of drugs like prednisone and methotrexate which made me feel sicker as I was also experiencing stomach troubles and an overall weakened immune system. I started seeing a naturopath 2 months after my initial flare and she prescribed a gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free, sugar-free diet to treat the source of my inflammation (which for me was yeast overgrowth and malnutrition). My hair started growing within a few weeks and now 8 months later, I have a full head of white regrowth! I have to emphasize though that this has been a long, sometimes difficult, journey and that it's really a lifestyle change as anytime that I start to make too many exceptions to this diet, I feel the effects throughout my body. I'm happy to share more advice on what worked for me and while this "treatment" might not work for everyone, the relationships and concepts behind nutrition, food sensitivities, gut psychology, stress, inflammation, and autoimmune disease are really compelling and offer a lot of hope for us.

Jaclyn and btfbaldgrrl,

Thanks for the suggestions! These are just the tips to get me motivated again to improve my diet. Time to start looking for new recipes! :)
