I have seen video of grown men and women just crying in pain as they get these shots. I was truthful with my 8 year old and told her the shots would be painful, but in the end it was her choice. Two years later, no shots. (we have tried squaric acid, with some good results, minor side affects) I will support any choice she makes. I also let her email other children her age from this website, the encouragement has helped her be strong. I know as a mother you worry so much about how your daughter will be received. I have had to check my pride at the door and realize it's only hair. Good luck in any option you choose.

We haven't investigated the options very far, as Boo is mostly comfortable with his hair loss, and it seems that, beyond any other side effects, the discomfort of the shots is greater than the mental discomfort of going bald. That's just our current assessment, and may change over time. I know there are people around here who have had great success with the steroid injections, and I'm sure they will be happy to tell you their experiences.

Good luck, whichever way you go!

i have a seven year old daughter who has alopecia and has lost a lot of her hair and the doctors are talking about starting her on a low dose of steroids to see if that will stimulate hair growth. i am concerned about the side effects of this treatment. what are other people's opinions??

thank you!- you're just what we'd like our Evie to grow up to be. We are doing ok now, but I'm sure in a few years it will be difficult. If she has any questions for you, from her 5 year old perspective I'll pass them on. She's pretty comfortable with herself now,and has a wig but almost never wears it, which makes me happy that she feels so good about herself. All the best, Gail

Any mothers of of college-age daughters with alopecia? My daughter was diagnosed in her high school years. She has come to grips with this pretty well. I'm so thankful. She has a few steadfast girlfriends, which has helped a great deal. I think my main concern is that she wants a husband and children so badly in the future. I worry about her meeting the right guy. She went to her high school prom with a group of girlfriends and guyfriends. As a mother, I just hope she realizes her life's dreams.

I have had AA for 19 years. I got it when i was 9, i am now 28.

parents play a huge role in this with your kids. I remember my mom crying WITH me. But she would always stop first.  She would help me do my hair and try to cover it up as much as we could, even though it would take about an hour every morning.   Letting her let me make the decisions about my treatments was the best thing.  She took me to see doctors to learn with her, I've done it all.  Creams, shampoos, needles.  Finally, what was that all for? It never really goes away.  You focus on a spot, and hope that the treatments work, sometimes they do, soemtimes they dont.  A spot disappears, and a new one comes.  You just have to support them no matter what they are feeling, but boost their self esteem.  You have to be show your child that it is ok, not the end of the world.  Beauty is inside, not out.

I am 25 year old woman with Alopecia that has embraced my baldness! I would like to be a support system for families with young children that have lost their hair. Someone for them to talk to, look up too, and see that you can be happy without hair! If any family or parent needs some support or someone to talk to please message me!
