Hello Everyone,
My daughter was diagnosed at age 8 with AA and she is currently 90% hair loss. She is now 10 and We have found a new Dermatologist who is trying a new treatment called an Eximer Laser, typically used for patients who suffer from Psoriasis/Ecxema. She had found information about some limited studies that had been done on AA patients to promote Hair growth and to stimulate a response. In a different location she had also done the steroid injections to compare the results of both. To our surprise she had an equally comparative result and luckily for us, insurance has covered both types of treatment. Just want to get the word our there that she having promising results from the Eximer Laser and is currently having regrowth in almost all areas of hair loss. Some areas may be a little more stubborn and resistant as they have been gone longer. We are very excited about this and just want to make others aware that this form of therapy is out there and may be an alternative, much less painful option, for yourself or your child. It has very minimal risk, similar to the effects of a very slight sun burn. I cannot stress the amount of growth she has had in just as little as 4 weeks time. Hope this is helpful and will continue to try to update or answer any questions anyone may have.
Hi Igotluckey. My daughter was diagnosed with AA aged 3. Within 9 or 10 months it had all grown back again and her hair was just like anyone else's for the next 5 years. Last year age 8 - when we'd forgotten all about AA - it all fell out. She is now AT. But I wouldn't assume any patterns for your daughter. Everyone's journey seems to be different and the hard thing with alopecia is it's so unpredictable. Fingers crossed that this is a short-term thing for your little girl. Stay strong for her.
Hello bluesky! My son's started at 18 months with patches, but everything was gone, including eyebrows and eyelashes, by the time he was 3. He is now 7. He occasionally gets light fuzz, but they never go anywhere. We are still always hopeful because it is unknown what the body can do. We have learned that his was probably triggered by leaky gut and infections, including Lyme. Anyway, he is still very confident and I attribute it to the fact that speak openly and honestly about everything and we don't behave as though it is a problem. We laugh a lot and enjoy life as it is and never give him reason to feel something is wrong with him. All I can say is focus on the positive so that your son doesn't pick up any negative energy as though he should be sad or embarrassed about hair loss.

I caught a segment of the Today Show this morning. They did an experiment to see the impacts of curly and straight hair when women changed their look from one to the other. The show invited women to tweet their comments and picture...so I did.
I think this is a great opportunity to get attention for those of us and our children who don't have hair. Please check out the link and share it in as many places as you can think of. And, if you are willing, tweet a picture of your child with alopecia to the today show. You'll find the hash tag when you click on the link.
