Sisterhood of Women who Shaved their Heads

This group is for women who have taken the bull by the horns and decided to shave their heads. It is also for those that aspire to someday shave their head. Hopefully we can provide support, guidance and compassion to one another.

So happy to join this group! I shaved my head on "90210" and Im SO happy that I did!! I feel 110% better than I did with my baldspotted head! Im going around with no wig or scarf, enjoying how free I feel!!

I find that now, I actually hate to cover my head. Even in the winter, as soon as I get inside I take my winter hat off.

I totally understand you Annelies!! I'm bald for the past 2 years, and for the first 6 months I never left the house without a wig. I eventually felt as if I was wearing a costume, pretending to be someone I'm not. So, now I've been totally bald, anywhere and everywhere and always -- and I'm loving it!! I rarely see any bald women here in New Hampshire, but I'm ok with that. I'm comfortable with who I am and how I look. And I'm so grateful for this group of women who all support and encourage each other!! Best wishes to all!! :)

Hello!

I am totaly bald for 6 years now. I have wear a wig for the first 3 years I had alopecia. But the last 6 years I wanna be who I am, and not who the people wanna see.
Thats the reason that I don't wear a wig.
This is who I am, This is what I am, Nothing else!
Cool to see that I am not the only one. Here in the netherlands don't you see a lot of bald woman!

Greetings!

Yikes! I never photographed well until I shaved my head, there was always the bad hair day and the "is my Bald spot showing" and other reasons my photos sucked. I also never wore makeup until I shaved my head, I learned quickly to use eye make up and lipstick to accentuate my Baldness. My license is in Bald Beauty because that's the kinda day my pic was taken on, I do what ever floats my boat when it comes to my Baldness. I love it when I give my license as ID when I have on a wig and folks give me a "double take". I have Bald photos around my house as well as photos with all types of hair including huge afros, I love it! Two of my brothers are photographers, they take pics of me in natural settings, the pics are awesome sometimes and sometimes I look like crap, it's life! Like Cheryl said, women are forever changing and so our looks change sometimes too! Just know you are beautiful!

Having nice photos of myself bald has helped me when I was feeling down about my hairlessness. I recommend taking them.

These are my favorites. The first one was posed, but natural:

This one was candid, and captures how I was feeling that night - comfortable with my baldness and confident:

After I lost my hair 2 and a half years ago, I put several "bald" photos out around our house, along with the older ones where I had hair...it helped with my adjustment to accepting this new woman in the mirror.

I also think it depends on how you usually go about you daily life. I do not wear wigs, so it would not make sense to have a drivers license with a wig on. If by chance I wore a wig when I left the house, then it would make sense to have the photo with the wig on.

As for liking photos of yourself. I think it takes a bit of a time to really come to terms that what you know see in the mirror is you. You know you hit that point when you can look at photos of yourself and no longer comparing them to yourself with hair. But, as woman we are always changing, gaining or losing weight, aging and with alopecia, growing and losing eyebrows & eyelashes. Whether we have alopecia or not, changes are inevitable. Like EVERYBODY, we have some great photos and some that nobody will ever see ;). The great thing about digital cameras is that we can do do-overs or press delete on the ones we don't like. The photos that I ended up really liking are the ones that I am just comfortably being me. Like the photo I am using for my profile photo, I am dancing with a senior at a veterans hospital. I was having a great time, it was a great moment and somebody captured it.

It's not like I ever looked great in pictures of myself but I agree that the best ones were taken by chance when I'm most natural. I just saw a video of myself and I couldn't get through it, it was that bad. Maybe I'm still getting familiar with the new me, it's only been since April. I feel better and more confident looking out then I do looking at myself, if that makes sense :{

Dear all, yes Mary, for me that seems to be the most logical and natural attitude. It is just one more step in our way to deal with the world. Photos and me? I like the photos I am making of myself, but after 6 months of bald out, I have not seen a lot of photos with my bald head on it. It is as if the others hesitated... it takes time... In some difficult baldie moments I use to go into our photo gallery, I look at all these very nice faces and heads to feel better. It works. Thank you all smiling faces!
