Wow Bumblebee, you're really strong to go forward that quickly. In every case it is good for you to do it this way.
I hope you will get the job.
Good to hear that Christa! I just had a job interview yesterday. Since a couple of week people can notice that I have AA as I shaved my hair off. I was busy applying for jobs before the hair loss started and a week after the shave off I was invited for an interview "OMG!" I went to the job interview without too many expectations wearing a scarf and a hat and when I had to introduce myself during the interview (who am I, where am I from?) I also explained AA . The people were understanding and it was a big step for me as I even did not inform some friends yet. No news yet if I got the job, I'm crossing my fingers :)
I had a training for job interviews recently. The trainer first seemed to consider baldness as disability. After my presentation and interview, she changed her opinion and could imagine the positive aspect (strong problem management ability, personality,...) So we decided to begin any future job interview by explanation of my condition and style, just to clean up the minds before speaking about really important things regarding the job...I tried and got the job. But actually I have no physical contact with customers in my job...
This is the best decision I could have ever made. The thousands of dollars I spent on wigs and weaves would have been better spent on a personal trainer.
I feel a sense of freedom I never felt before.
Yeah Marinetta. I felt the same way. A sense of control makes a huge difference
Yesterday was the big day! I now feel that I control my hair, not the other way around! I might be a control freak but at least I feel like myself again. I documented the process, it felt appropriate.
Well they do complicate things don't they. At least we don't have a dress code or any other rules dictating what to wear. There is an unspoken rule to look presentable when there is a customer visit or if we head out to a customer (but nothing defining what presentable is).
I actually got fitted for a wig yesterday. I still havn't decided on what I want or how to go about this. And I'm loosing my hair really fast so I feel rushed, but I also feel detached from my hairloss.
I also came upon this question a couple of years back. I spoke with my boss just to clarify what I was going to do and also since I work in a casino where ANY head covering is not allowed due to security reasons. I made sure I stayed professional when speaking but raised the case that, at the time I was not comfortable with going bare. That if my wig wearing was acceptable then in the terms of head covering if wigs were allowed then for me any head covering should be allowed. I tend to wear scarves mostly.
Currently tho Im have come to this issue yet again at my employment, since the company was bought. Now it appears that some of the new bosses are having difficulties with my head scarves and Im not a wig wearer. Going bare is no longer an option since dress code states no visual-able tattoos. And I have a head tatt.
I think, in this context, it would be a good idea to have a talk with the both, but not in a sense of asking his/her permission, rather in term of problem solving. People should be free in their choice of a style, i agree, however, in contemporary "service economy" what is sold is not physical or even mental capacities, but rather sociality/communicative performance that quite strongly depends (due to social stereotypes) on a proper appearance. This is so to say objective condition. Alopecia is not something that people choose deliberately, but there are some means to deal with the appearance issue (like extensions, hair pieces) if one decides to go for a compromise for the sake of other benefits that the job provides.
