This group is for women who have taken the bull by the horns and decided to shave their heads. It is also for those that aspire to someday shave their head. Hopefully we can provide support, guidance and compassion to one another.

Thanks for sharing. This is a really small company which could be both good and bad. But its a consultancy firm so I need my boss to "sell" me (sounds really weird when i say it like that) therefore I don't want him thinking there's anything wrong with me or that i'm not capable of doing my job. I think I might tell him, just to make sure he doesn't jump to conclusions. If it wasn't for the selling part I wouldn't care and I agree that my choice of haircut shouldn't concern anyone else (with or without alopecia).
Thanks again, btw this place (AW) is great!
I agree with the permission thing.
I do, however, like the idea of courteously preparing people for a change. I asked myself why, and my conclusion ultimately is to assist OTHERS in helping ME with the transition, ie, allowing them the opportunity to be conscious to not say/do something stupid--or at least minimize it.
You also do not want to feel like you are asking for permission. What if your supervisor tells you that he/she thinks it is not a good idea. I went to the company Christmas party without the hairpiece and then after that never wore a wig again. I guess that was my ease in.
I told one coworker in advance for support. I did not mention it to my employer/supervisor. I walked into work like it was any other day with a smile on my face. This was September 7th 2010. My boss has never mentioned it. Why tell your boss? If your boss has a questions he/she will ask. I did not feel the need to volunteer that information. IMO, it would seem like I felt it was a problem.
Hello everybody greatings from windy (&%&¤#) sweden :P. I was wondering how you dealt with work and employer when you went bald. Did you talk to your boss befor or did you just go for it, suprising everybody. I'm really indecisive. I would like to tell my boss, to make sure they don't worry, but i don't want to make a big deal out of it. Any ideas on how to go about?
Heather, Sounds like a great conference!
Posted pics on facebook Friday, and received an overwhelming positive response throughout the weekend. (Got comments from folks I'd even forgotten were "friends" :) Only two people asked (or inferred) if I might be ill, but even THEY commented positively about the look.
It's amazing though, how sensitive we can be. Even with all of those positive comments I was feeling "some kinda way" when three people only made "neutral" comments like "Wow, that was very brave of you"; "Now you should get a tatto"; and "I see you". Although not really negative, they weren't what I expected or wanted to hear from them.
Being one who subscribes to the principles of honesty, and "if you don't have nothing positive to say, don't say nothing at all", I respect their not lying to make me feel good, and keeping their other felt thoughts/feelings to themselves.l just wanted to hear different--from those three particularly.
Anyone else have similar experiences/emotions?
Am feeling kinda "bluesy" this morning.
Hadn't "touched up" my shave since I got it last week, so I decided to do the Magic Shave Creme and it removed very little of the stubble.
So now my scalp is looking "alien-like" and I'm thinking the upkeep for this is going to be more work than I'd expected.
I don't even want to deal with the gels, razors, etc. so I am now looking for an electric razor which will give me the closest shave. Have read some good stuff about upkeep on Linda's page.
I was also looking forward to sitting out on my balcony to get a little sun on my scalp while doing some paperwork but so far it's only 59 degrees--In JULY!
Oh well--headsup! : )
Still having not gone in public exposing my shave, I DID let someone see it today--well almost...My cousin, whose more like a brother to me is in town for the weekend. We went out for brunch and I told him about the shave. We talked about it (all the girls on that side of family are known for having a full head of hair--including me at one time). When we came home we looked at a video of Sonya Renee Taylor and I showed him photos of some of the beautiful Black women I've collected who wear "the shave". He had positive remarks about them all but I still wouldn't take my scarf off.
So after he left I took my first pictures and was actually kind of pleased with them so I text a couple to him via phone! *o*
He responded saying "Beautiful Black Woman...and Proud".
I'm now about to upload a few here and on Facebook.
I also sent an e-mail "announcement" to friends informing them that I have a new look, along with photos, to prepare them for my appearance. (I think I'll send it to my neighbors too :)
Exhaling!!! :D
Hello Ladies (:
I joined AW 5 months ago and am just logging back in the first time since then. So I will be completing my profile and adding a picture shorly.
Tuesday, in honor of "Independence" Day I finally went to the barber college and got the "shave". I've spent the day just getting use to just seeing myself in the mirror in preparation for going public; and gathering photos of African-American women wearing the shave.
I've been "warning" friends and acquaintances, most whom have been really positive. I know once I finally go out I'll be fine, but I'm going to need lots of support. One of the things which I'm anxious for is for the skin on my scalp to blend in with my face. Did anyone else have that initial experience and how long did it take without over exposure to the sun and sunburn? Today I actually put make-up on my head! :D
Also, if anyone is in the S.F. East or North Bay Area, I'd love to connect with some ladies.
