Yes it's weird alright. My blood test show normal range of iron but whenever I give blood they always tell me I'm low in iron...go figure!
I've always had a problem with low iron even when I ate meat. Sometimes I take iron pills mostly not.
Yes there's no relationship between losing hair and being a veggo. About pregnancy, I don't believe there's a problem. A friend of mine has had two children and both have been brought up vegetarian from birth with no ill effects. They do eat some cheese though, but only soy milk no cow milk. They cook without eggs. I don't think she had to watch her diet particularly while pregnant but I'll ask for you...and no I don't think its being selfish at all....probably a lot healthier in many ways.
what are your views on being pregnant and staying a vegetarian? would you consider it selfish? i know one has to be very careful about getting all the nutrients they need but besides that. any advice?
Yep my pescetarian diet - some fish included in mine - gets blamed for my alopecia too....my polymyalgia gets blamed on my jogging ...it drives me crazy so I don't even mention my various ailments these days, not worth the frustration lol!
pat-i have also been switching to vegan! I've been vegetarian for 5 years but vegan still so hard. especially for eating out. I don't eat cheese eggs or most dairy anymore but frozen yoghurt is what usually gets me :P
kara-i've never heard of lack of meat/blood being related to autoimmune disorders or alopecia. I would be skeptical. For me anyway, I had alopecia long before I stopped eating meat. I find that some meat eaters will try to find reasons for why a vegetarian diet is bad for your health, whether they have the facts to back it up or not. They just want a reason to justify eating animals. I have plenty of friends who are veg and they all have full heads of hair and are very healthy ;)
I have been a vegetarian since I was a young child because I didn't like the taste and texture of meat, and got even more strict as I've gotten older. I admit I am not the healthiest of vegetarians, and I eat a lot of pasta and lean cuisines. ANYWAY, so many people have told me I brought alopecia on myself with my diet. Last night I saw an acupunturist for the first time, and even HE said I really need to consider adding meat to my diet. He says the Chinese believe alopecia is caused by "not enough blood" and I need to eat meat to make more blood. He is going to investigate more and make up some herbs for me. I wish they made a "meat oil pill", I might consider taking that. I take fish oil pills now, but it took me years to work up the courage to take one. LOL
