Alopecia Ontario

Searching for fellow Ontarians with Alopecia. I have been dealing with alopecia for the last 20 years, and I'm finally done dealing with it alone. Is there anyone out there?

Hello, recently joined this group which appears to have all types of Alopecia. I wondered if anyone has been helped with this affliction. I had been diagnosed at Sunnybrook in the fall of 2012 and…Continue

Looking forward to seeing you Amanda - There is a good sized group of alopecia folks coming. I am also psyched about the sessions with Jeff Donovan - he's actually also part of the latest research panel saturday morning!

Hi All, I know I'm like a broken record here, but I have great news. the Skin Matters conference with 4 alopecia sessions starting on the 12th in Toronto has received some generous funding and is now able to drop the registration fee from $150/$200 per person to FREE until the money runs out - so its limited. Please seriously look at it and consider coming. We are all dealing with the same stuff. I think it will help if we get together and connect and learn about the new research that is underway from one of the top alopecia docs in the country. www.canadianskin.ca/conference2012 check it out. please consider coming..

Regarding the dietary changes: I had lost 75% of my hair over about 2.5 months. Then I switched to a strict, Paleo-style anti-inflammatory diet. Among other benefits, my hair stopped falling out and I have had 100% regrowth of my hair. I know my case is different because I didn't experience scarring, but I figure switching to a slightly radical but highly healthy diet is less scary for me than medical interventions.

Since alopecia is autoimmune, it might be worth looking into the Paleo autoimmune protocol diet. Just my 2 cents! :)

DMF - I am def going to check out the north York meeting. I plan to sign up for the skin conference too. My situation is a little different in that they will not use the AU and other A treatments on me because my condition is a thinning of the hair caused by inflammation not autoimmune. Then the follicles scar over from the inflammation and hairs will never grow in that spot again. (scarring alopecia) pretty sad. Anyways, mine was caught early so we are trying to reduce the inflammation to stop the process. As long as we do this, I shouldn't keep shedding and I respond really well to rogaine because the uninflammed areas are like normal (yet thinning) scalp. I secretly think I also may have AA. I am thinking of trying an antiinnflametory diet.

dmf and amanda - check out the Skin matters conference programme. - see my post below. maybe you'll find something resonates.
the situation in Canada with hair specialists is dire. It makes me think we really need to do something to get more derms interested in this area. Jeff Donovan and I have talked about it. I think that it is one thing we could do if we all banded together - is work on getting alopecias more prominence. I will see if there are any people at the conference willing to work on this.

I've been seeing him for a few years. Seems I got in just before he stopped taking new patients. He told me he trained Al-Harithy and she consults with him so you get the best of two doc's opinions. I hope you see results from Anthralin - thinking hairy thoughts for you. :) Please keep us posted.

@dmf, I tried to see Donovan, but he is no longer taking patients. Anthralin is kind of like DCP in that it makes u itchy in an attempt to distract your immune system. Im about 9 weeks in, but I havent had any result :( it had a 30% success rate, but because I have had AU for 12 years my chances went down for it to work

@Amanda: I have not found much in the way of support groups here in Toronto, but I might not be looking in the right places. The CANAAF group looks like it meets pretty infrequently. I hope to get to one of the upcoming meetings, though - especially if others from here are going.

@Casey: I don't blame you for not going since your boss goes. What is anthralin? Does it hurt? Does it help?

I see Dr. Donovan at Sunnybrook. He is great and very knowledgeable but he works only one day a week so getting appointments can be difficult.
