Correct MnM. Most of the time it is Ok and I have learned to make the toppers a little longer at the sides for protection and coverage, but it does still become an issue. I have a new "piece" on order that takes three months to make. They take a mold of your front part of your head which includes around your ears and once made it is supposed to simulate a hairline. I am waiting anxiously for it. I guess you tape it all around your hairline including in front of your ears. It sort of looks like a flap. Stay tuned.....................
Sad in Chicago do you mind telling me where you went for the custom topper? I went to World Hair Inst for a consult, but I don't think I can get back and forth downtown every month for the maintenance on their integrated system.
MnM, I had a topper made specifically to cover the frontal area of my hair line. I also only found toppers that only provided hair at the crown, that is why I came up with the idea of designing one the followed my pattern of loss. I had a pattern made for the base, then the topper was made specifically for me. I have also taken old wigs and cut them into the pattern to cover my loss. I used to clip in the topper, but now, due to more hair loss, I tape the topper in place.
Two places do it. I had great success originally with J. Krause, Sandy, in Skokie and continued to go to them, including this last new custom topper which I am waiting for. However, I went for another piece and found Hair For You Salon in Arlington Heights as well, see Linda, which will do it too. I am happy with both places. They are very different in personality. J. Krause has been in business for years and years, Sandy runs it, and is the daughter of the original owners. Linda owns and runs Hair For You, which is a full beauty shop as well as a great resource for anything you might need. I tried WHI institute too, and found the downtown thing as well as the price, daunting.
My custom piece is actually glued to my scalp all the way around. The hair is long and thick enough to cover everything it needs to. About 1/3 of what you see is my real hair and 2/3 is from the topper. Even when windy it's not bad. If I lift up the hair you can see the baldness leading back to my ear.
So Curly K do you remove the piece every night and re glue the next day? Does it itch? I do find the tape "gives" occasionally especially from summer heat, etc. What kind of glue? none of my ladies have turned me on to glue. I did try a "sports" tape with breathing holes in it, but it irritated me and gave me a rash on my scalp/forehead where it sat.
Hi Everyone, I feel like Ive been through so much getting a hair piece and after this year Ive learn to almost get it perfect. I have a system that tapes in the front and clips to my new hairline. The latest one on order take 3 month since I went thru a Hair Restoration co. I learned to put dark roots in my pieces to make it look more natural and it really helps. Im going to have a specialist put the roots in next time becuz you dont want to darken the hair knots on the lace cuz it makes it look like you have a dirty scalp. She will also perm it to match my curly hair. I learned this from watching all the wig videos on youtube and talking to 3 different hair restoration companies. If I continue to lose more hair I will have them glue it on and have it removed and reglued once a month just like what they do for mens topaes. Im waiting and hoping my inflamation will stop so I dont have to go to a wig. So hard to go thru this but Im doing the best I can to learn everything I can to get thru this. Ive posted pictures of my current piece on one of the posts here......
Thanks for your responses! I've lost about 2 inches at the temple and my front hairline is really active right now, so I want to be prepared in case I need a piece in the near future.
Sad in Chicago - Thank you for the salon names. They were ones on my list of places to look into, so I'm happy to get a recommendation from someone with experience.
I don't take mine off at all. I sleep, swim, bathe etc in it. I will go back to hair place once every 4-5 weeks to have them remove it, clean the piece and my scalp and reglue it. So far the glue is holding tight. Kind of like a surgical glue. It does itch a little at times but not a constant itch. It's comfortable for the most part. Took some time to get used to sleeping on it.
It's glued all the way around the base of the piece. It's glued right to my scalp and they shaved the top part of my head to do this. They turned me around in the chair so I couldn't watch in the mirror. They attached the piece and when they turned me around I cried when I saw hair on my head.it was so pretty! The two ladies in the room said it made me look 10 years younger. Now if you read my posts from 3 weeks ago you know I had a meltdown for two days after cause it was so traumatic but now I'm getting used to it. I get nothing but compliments on my hair both from people who know about the alopecia and those who don't.
CurlyK I ordered 2 pieces that sound just like your piece. They charged me $1695.for both. I found a salon in Terre Haute, IN that's only an hour and a half from me. I have to wait 6 to 7 more weeks for them to be made. I'm dreading getting the top of my head shaved but I'm looking forward to having hair on the top of my head. I've purchased 3 wigs over the last couple of years but I haven't worn them. I've been wearing headbands and bananas which don't look very good but they cover some of the loss. Sorry I'm rambling. I'm just so excited that someone is having good luck with this type of custom piece.
Bu US you're welcome. I hate to get my head shaved back to the crown so I'm not going to watch. I haven't shed any tears yet but I might that day. The crazy thing is I have lots of new hair growing at my temples but the sides, above my ears, and top of my head to my crown keeps receding and scarring. Strange disease.
Oh now I understand. Thanks for sharing. I am not ready for shaving, I still have enough in back and on the side up towards the crown for a clip in. I will keep you all posted on the custom piece made from a mold that will give me a hairline and "sideburns"..... waiting anxiously.
BU, I think you will be happy with it too! It took a few days for me to get the application down- this is what I do, I give my hair a quick shot with the blow dryer first and then shake the powder on the top of my head at the part, along my hairline and above my ears & blend it in along with the roots, then I do a double check with my hand mirror to make sure I got it all the shiny spots & reapply if I missed any, then smooth my hair all out (it gets a little wild after all the blending) & spritz hairspray lightly at the roots- my hair does look fuller too after using this, haha I am always looking in my rearview mirror now and liking what I see, no more shiny scalp!
Awesome Bu! I am so happy you are happy with it :-D
Question for you, I did look at the Joan Rivers Great Hair Day, how do you like it and how do you use it with the BoostnBlend?
Also, just back from my monthly Dermo. visit, got my usual steroid injections along the hairline & eyebrows, this time she diluted it a bit and injected on the top of the scalp also. I am going to stay with just topicals & steroid injections for the time being as I am having such bad reactions to the minocycline and plaquenil :-/
I didn't realize the Joan Rivers came with a brush, yes that would make it easier along the hairline... I apply bare minerals bronzer powder with a brush along my hairline sometimes, why have I never thought to try BnB using a brush at the difficult to apply hairline/temples area! Bu, I am so so happy to hear that this is helping you, it is amazing how it works and covers up the shiny areas & I agree, Lauren has awesome info!
Well I have not been on the group site for ages as my old email address was hacked and I lost all my previous emails and links. Anyway still have the dreaded condition and yesterday had an appointment at Guys to see Dr Bhargava. A very nice and empathetic chap but no information I'd not heard before. Have not been taking anything for 6 months however he has suggested another course of Hydroxychloroquine and topical lotions. I'm feeling very confused but given that I'm now at the point where the interlace system is for me maybe I should try again with the medication. Liz I know you have had the interlace but some of the online reviews make sad reading. Would like to hear from anyone with their views on Lucinda Ellery Consultancy. All the best to you all Claire.
Oh! I am surprised .... I got an intralace system seven months ago. Yesterday I went back to have a new hair piece fitted (they call it a natural hairline parting or something)- and I am more than happy.
There sre things you have to get used to, and you learn as you go. So when I first had it fitted, the styling was too heavy around my face. My hair is short and it looked wrong. So I had it re-styled. The colour was also a bit out. You couldn't see that in the salon - I had been there all day more or less, and by the time they finished it was dark. Daylight showed it was slightly wrong, so I called and they could not have been better. I went back the next day and they recoloured, including my own hair.
This time I knew exactly what I wanted, so the styling is right and the colour too. It's great.
It's not cheap, but no one knows the hair is not my own, apart from my family and friends, all of whom I told. I can do anything with it with confidence, including (hooray) go out in the wind. And it is easy to maintain - all I do is follow their instructions and use an argon-based conditioner, avoid excessive use of heat (as in straighteners)and use a correct hairbrush so I don't pull the hair out.
I wss told I would need the hair replacing every four months, but I went seven - and it was okay. Still realistic, which for me is the main thing.
The people at the clinic are great - very friendly and very helpful. And going there makes you realise quite how many women have hair loss.
I can't recommend it enough. As I say, not cheap, but for me, really worth it.
Where are you based? I am in Surrey - if you want to meet up and I can show you, that's fine by me.
My daughter lives in Brighton if you would like to meet up at some point? I am happy to do so, as I know what it is like, and I know how difficult the decision is.
Going for mine December 1st. A little nervous. How long before the scabbing fell off? Also getting my other new custom piece next week. Stay tuned............
Was it someone called Sarah who did your eyebrows? I was recommended to her, but haven't done anything about it. I had my eyebrows first tatooed about four years ago and they need redoing, but the original person is no longer around.
They look great Liz!! I just had mine done in August and it was the best thing I ever did.
Sad in Chicago - it took about 7 days to feel normal again. The first few days they were really dark and swollen, scabbing started after a few days, but it wasn't like a wound scab, more of a crust that was the color of the dark Tatoo. Once that started coming off it was fine. The color set in, swelling went down and my confidence went UP! It was scary and I was worried I was going to hate them, but I'm so happy. I'm getting them touched up in January.
Liz your eyebrows look great. I have had mine done and I am very pleased with the result.ive been going to a lady in East Sussex for the last 3 years. Her business is called Natural Enhancements.
Hi. Thank you all for your lovely comments about my eyebrows I'm really pleased with them. Sad in Chicago. I've now had them for 4 days. As MnM says they don't scab in the way that other wounds scab. If I look at them now closely I can't really see any scabbing. When I wash them the cotton pad is just a bit brown the same colour as the tattoo.I felt incredibly nervous before I had them done. I put it off for months but I'm due to start a new job so I thought I'd pluck up the courage to get them done and I'm so glad I did. Denise, it was a lady called Sarah who did them. She is based in London. She's a lovely lady who I felt at ease with xx
Thanks everyone for letting me know about your eyebrows. I am scheduled for Dec. 1 and am also very nervous, but looking forward to not drawing them in everyday!
That's great Liz. I am assuming it was the same one. She works at Lucinda Ellory part time, and got chatting to me - hence considering her. Will go with her now!
When I had my eyebrows done some years ago now (before I realised the extent of my hair loss and though the eyebrows were 'it') I looked, for the first few days, as if I were a pantomime dame. They were so dark and pronounced. But of course once they settled, they weren't like that at all.
Yep - I need them done again, have put it off for a long time, purely because I am so busy. But this has now inspired me. Make an appointment Denise!
Liz, your eyebrows look really nice! I have been tossing around getting my own done, but don't think I'm ready yet. Between you, DeniseC and Claire Julia, seems like it's all happening there in the UK! I'm heading over for a month in the beginning of November & stopping in at Guys hospital to give a blood sample for the FFA study and maybe I'll take a trip to Lucinda Ellory and see what this intralace is all about- it's easier for me to go to the one in London then here in America! :-/

Minter - I got FFA and the lichen on the front of my scalp three years ago after lots of extra medications to help my immune system - that is so funny as I type this - turning 65 had to have those shots for shingles and pneumonia and turned into FFA and lichen - go figure - I only had one big shed - but wanted to let you know that I have dyed my hair the whole time with no ill effects. Hair loss is about an inch all the way around but stopped right after the shed - I am fortunate as my hair covers it and unless I show people they do not notice it. The lichen is another story - mostly gone but stress and sugar - which we all like when we are stressed - seems to flare it up occasionally - just right in the front and affects maybe three rows of hair. Makes the base of the hair look slightly swollen but so much less than it was in the beginning. I have no itching either. I also have had a huge reduction in the tinitis that I had on the same side that they gave me the shots - and yes that sounds crazy as well. I do not use sunblock unless going to be in the sun for a long time and then only zinc based. I have continued the mineral makeup but am still a little conflicted about that. I am saddened as I wish I knew what has stopped mine as I would definitely pass that along.
I think mine is at least an inch all the way around too- so far my eyebrows are thin, but still able to fake it! I also have been using boostnblend on my brows, that is much better then regular brow powder :-) I actually got my hair colored a shade darker then earlier, it looks more fuller then when it was a lighter shade, oddly enough-I still use sunblock, I would rather have a bald head then risk skin cancer :-/ also Dr Christos Tziotzios from Guys hospital in London (see the thread above) states that sunblock has nothing to do with this-
