I'm an artist and author living in Portland, Oregon. I've had aa for about 45 years. My award-winning book, "If Your Hair Falls Out, Keep Dancing!" is still available at a number of online sources including Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Written a few years ago, it's not completely up to date on medical findings, but these are readily available on this site.
Here are a couple of reviews: This "how-to" book provides a much needed text on dealing with emotional and cosmetic aspects of hair loss, whether from alopecia areata or chemotherapy. It details where to find and how to use products for compensating with this loss. It is written in the same bold and bright style that characterizes LeslieAnn's illustrations." -Janet Roberts, M.D., Portland Oregon
"This book is helpful, hopeful, funny and fabulous. It's full of practical advice about wigs, intimate encounters, the inappropriate questions from strangers, and other issues you face when every day is a bad hair day. Women with alopecia, LeslieAnn Butler is your new best friend " -Margie Boul , Columnist, The Oregonian ..
"An essential read, whether you've lost hair, or care about someone who has. Leave it to Leslie Ann to bring humor and glamour to a difficult topic. She is a living testament that the lack of flowing locks is no reason not to live your most glamorous and joyful life. Be inspired and uplifted by this remarkable woman's personal journey." -Nita Lina Howard, Author of A Woman's Journey is Her Legacy
I wrote "If Your Hair Falls Out, Keep Dancing!" to help other people -- particularly women and girls --and it's one that I wish I had been able to find when I discovered I had alopecia years ago.
I have stumbled through all the stages of grief (feeling guilty because, after all, there are worse things than alopecia), figuring out how to look normal, bouncing from one treatment to another, buying and ruining or rejecting dozens of wigs, losing every single hair on my body, figuring out how to tell guys I was dating, living in fear of the wind and someone touching my head…all in all, going from heartbreak to acceptance to joy and confidence. And it's all in the book, along with experiences of others, advice on wigs, makeup, products, treatments -- and how you can celebrate your life with alopecia areata, go after your dreams, and know you're not alone."
LeslieAnn,
I do well most of the time. I have had alopecia in some form or another since I was thirteen. I hope your book is successful. I am sure you will touch many lives through it.
You look fantastic! I definitely need to buy a copy of your book. I think I deal pretty well with my AA. I've had some depression over the situation over the 36 years but for the most part I'm a happy woman. It's funny but I told 3 of my grandchildren that I don't have hair. They all took it very well. The 5 year old is really funny about it. She'll snuggle nex to me and look at my wig and say "it's our secret that you don't have any hair right?" I had to tell them it was a secret so that they didn't tell all of their friends at school. I think that it's too much information for kids 11 and under.
You look like you have a great life and have lived very with with this disease,
hiii (: well the kids are treating me like they always treated me before; its just that, they look at me more and more..and i know they arent looking at me just to be looking , i know they are looking because of my hair. well im glad i have friends that always check for me, i mean i still have hair, but not as much as i use to. i wear a wig, but i havent wore it to school yet ): im way to nervous.
ok...me too. Do you have makeup tips in your book? hehe I wear eyeliner...and nobody can tell...and yes..on dates and special events, I wear false ones. Do you just wear the top or the bottoms? I only wear the top lashes, but Im thinknig about ordering the bottom ones also. Do you have permanent makeup as well?
Thank you for the warm welcome. My husband has been so supportive through this journey. I just lost all my hair back in January so it has been so nice to find this site and read about the stories of others that are going through the same thing. It is especially nice to meet other women and get their tips on eyelashes, wigs, etc.... any advice I get I will take. I am still trying to come to terms with losing all my hair. I am hoping every day brings me a little more peace and comfort. This site is a great start for me.
Hi LeslieAnn! I am a parent of a child with AA. She was diagnosed about 7 years ago and has had a steady but slow loss. She has a growth pattern that would best be described as a reverse monk. She has hair on the top circle of her head that she grows down over the bald areas. I joined alopeciaworld to help her out, as much as she needs it.
My alopacia falls out in the spring and comes back in the fall.its the weirdest thing! i just wish they would find a cure faster :\
By your own oppinion, do you think that if a person has alopacia, most likley all there hair will fall out? _and also do u wear a wig or something? or did all your hair come back? your hair is so pretty!
Hi Leslie- My hair is growing like a weed these last 2 months, I don't know what's happening, but its great, I will add a new pic later today when I am home from work.
well at first, my eyebrows were coming back in, but then they all fell out again. i still have my eyelashes..i wonder if they will ever come out! well, i have a wig and i just got it, and i havent worn it to school yet.
hey leslieann!! your book sounds interesting i might just have to go buy it! :) yah loosing the hair before prom was a little bit of a shock but im getting a little more use to it now, its a growing process for sure!
Thanks for checking on me. I really like your name, too. That's also my middle name. Leslie Ann. What a small world.
I'm doing okay with my Alopecia. Some days it really bothers me other days I think "WOW! If this is as bad as my life gets, that's pretty damn good!" I've had AT for about 21 years now. I really don't think about it much, unless I know I'm going to see someone that I haven't seen in many years. I do wonder sometimes, if people can tell I'm wearing a wig. Which is stupid, because no one has ever know. Even at the salon with my daughter, the hair dresser said what pretty hair I had and even felt it. She didn't realize it was a wig.
Thanks for the note. I am very new to chat rooms (if that is what this is!) so I'm not used to checking in. My grandson is doing all right. He also has ADHD, which is really a bigger issue because he is taking medicine and that needs to be regulated. His personality has changed so much, but medicine is the only thing that keeps him focused for school. It is hard to be his grandma and love him so much, yet see him facing these major challenges. Like almost everyone else affected by AA, we are so grateful that he is basically a health kid. I only get sad when I look at pictures of him before he lost his hair (and before we knew he had ADHD). God has his reasons, I know...
P.S. My daughter lives in Portland. She's an OB nurse.
I see Dr. Roberts for Cortizone injections about every 1.5 years or so... actually, I was just there two weeks ago! I buy my hair pieces for Wells Hair Goods in Beaverton... I have been going to them for years (although only once or twice a year as I only wear hair to work).
Are you involved in the support group at all?
From what I have heard a support group has started up again in the Beaverton area. The leaders are a couple who have a daughter with Alopecia. There was an article written about her in a local paper recently. I have their phone number, but have yet to call!
Hi there. Marietta is really close to Atlanta, in fact I am headed there this evening to listen to some music on the square. Best square in the metro area!! I'm doing pretty well with my alopecia. I finally just stopped feeling bad about it and figured people can either accept it or not!!! Your book sounds cool! Awesome of you to write something that you knew people needed.
I'm not sure if it will help or not. My condition only effects my eyelashes and it has done wonders. My dermatologist told me after three months of every day, I could start using it once or twice a month, but I noticed once I quit using it every day they started falling out again, so I'm back to once a week. Its definitely worth looking into. Loved your pics!
hi leslie ann thanks for ur message its always nice to hear from fellow alopecians im great thanks bald an beautiful as they say but yeah things are good x
Hi Leslie! It's great to meet you! I would love to see more of your work! I am an artist as well! My favorite medium is oil paints and pastels. I've had AT for about 4 years now. I've met some amazing people on this site!
hi leslie! my hair im having mixed thoughts about!! i kinda feel like im trying to hide who iam, which i dont want to do because i feel no need to! it is lovely hair, and i just got it highlighted yesterday and cut a few days before, but i think the cutter has cut the fringe ( not like a fringe to the eyebrows but a side sweep kinda thing) but overall i do like it... but im having a few air bubbles problems and im not really sure where the perfect fit will be on my head!! do you have a freedom wig? x
Thank you so much!! I was actually voted Homecoming Queen for my high school...which was pretty wild. I've never really been a girly girl, & I never thought of myself as a queen. But i was very flattered! =)
Hi LeslieAnn,
Thanks for your comment. It's great to meet other people with alopecia, especially those who've studied counseling! I was just talking to a friend the other day about how I would be interested in doing some counseling with/for other women who have alopecia. I'm glad you said hi, and we'll have to chat more.
Hi LeslieAnn,
Nice to meet you. Thank you for the nice comment about my poem. You have some great pictures posted. Your hair is gorgeous and those scenery pictures are breathtaking. You are such an inspiration and I can't wait to get a copy of your book. Thanx again for the comment and I hope to meet you someday.
Love and Hugs,
Dotty
Thanks for your message. I will definitely check out your book. I have been to a couple bookstores and they didn't have any books on alopecia. One bookstore had some that you could order- but only 3!!!! Even online, I only found 2 books!!! Way to go writing your own! That's very inspiring.
Hi LeslieAnne good to meet you and congrats on your book//when I told my husband someone on this site had written a book about their alopecia he said 'you should have done that!' haha
Hi Leslie, thanks for the comment. It's great that support is a two way street. I saw that you get your hair from Wigs International. I used to until I switched to New Hair Tech from NY because they are cooler for me. Just wished they lasted longer. I heard that Wigs Int is going out of business? What are you going to do? I HATE when stuff that I rely on changes and I have to figure out something new! I'm interested in your book for my "a.a. library". Which way do you prefer I order it? Heidi ...
Thanks for your comments LeslieAnn.
You are a very plucky lady. I am sure I would enjoy reading your book, when I get my hands on it.
I met my friend with universalitus just two weeks ago whilst walking our dogs, my Knute, and her Henry and Izzy at a local park. We get on famously, as do our dogs, and she laughs all the time, she has great spirit. She is the type of person, who puts a smile on your face and puts you in a good mood, just by seeing her. Such a young woman struck down with a great tragedy, but bounced back with a smile. Its not going to beat her. She has strong will, I think. I am honoured to have met her.
I must also comment, on your photos, they are amazing, your animals are fabulous, the scenery is breathtaking, your art is inspiring and you are so beautiful.. you ought to be very proud of yourself and your achievements.
I certainly will LeslieAnn, thank you so much for getting back to me so soon, its 10pm over here, I guess its about lunchtime over there....I hope you are well, and have a great day.
Give a cuddle to your cat and dog too.....I have already passed onto Knute her doggy cuddlee.......thanks so much. Look after yoursellf.......
hi LeslieAnn:
I haven't been on the site for a while. I have 3 kids and the end of the school year is always so busy. Rachel is doing great. And you are right, so far, this has been harder on me than her. Though I suspect that when she gets to middle school that will change. We are going to the NAAF convention so she can go to the kids camp. She is really looking forward to that. Thanks for asking. Betsy
Thank you for your sweet comments. I thought you might like to know that when I was first diagnosed with AA, I got a copy of your print that you did for NAAF. It is hanging in my office (I am a school administrator). It has brought me many smiles and given me the opportunity to share information about AA with many.
Christine
