I have been living with alopecia since 1991. Throughout the years, I have had alopecia areata and alopecia totalis. My life is not over, so there is still time for alopecia universalis. ;-) I have had many ups and down and find that I always come out on the other side standing tall.
It has always been a given for me to reach out to others with alopecia. I just did it naturally. I became involved in our local support group in Montreal, participated in the annual conferences of the National Alopecia Areata Foundation (NAAF), and also served as president of the Quebec Alopecia Areata Foundation (QAAF).
Someone once asked me what I planned to do after I moved to the USA. My initial thought was to attend or start a support group in Michigan, but I eventually settled on the wonderful idea of creating Alopecia World with my husband, rj jones, who was my fiancé at the time (2008).
On a personal note, I like to blend femininity and strength. A woman can be strong and physically capable as well as soft and feminine. For a long time, I thought I "had" to be one or the other, and I had a hard time finding my place. Blending both is very gratifying, indeed.
I also like to keep active. It does not have to be extreme. It can be a bike ride, walking, painting a room in the house, or cleaning the garage.
In April 2008, I married rj, a very special man that supports me in my alopecia and is the catalyst and the great mind behind the research and design of this site.
Please feel free to "friend" rj and me: We would love to make your acquaintance.
Hi Cheryl, thank you for the warm welcome. I just lost all my hair back in January so it has been so nice to find this site and read about the stories of others that are going through the same thing.
Just wanted to let you know that I updated my workshop/support group time for this Sunday - it's taking place at 5pm at my salon in New York City. Let me know if you can make it (I know you're in Montreal...but it's not that far!)!
Thank you for the invitation to this wonderful site!! You are such a blessing! And WOW are you ever beautiful!! I've already been showing Sarah Beth pictures of other people with alopecia to help her understand what's happening. I'm still looking for a local support group. I'd love for her to meet some other children going through the same thing. God bless you for all you are doing!! And...CONGRATULATIONS on your engagement!! You are a beautiful couple!!
Thanks for all the info Cheryl!! And the welcome! I just can't put into words what a blessing it is to have this site to meet other beautiful people, like yourself, for support. God bless you!!
Bonjour Cheryl,
It was indeed very nice to see you again! this meeting has given me a 'preview' of what the Conference will be... can't hardly wait to be there!
Diane :)
Yeah, that's a sneak peek at the pictures I took for Julia's book project. My photographer gave me 41 shots; I picked the 20 or so I liked the best and posted them and sent all of them to Julia. I'm glad you like them! Do you know that is the first time I've ever taken professional photos bare-headed? All of my other pictures are either of my own hair, with a wig or with a scarf or head covering of some sort??? That was an interesting experience, let me tell you!
I won't say so much that I felt beautiful -- I was having a lot of fun because the photographer brought his little boy with him (he's 3) and he was being a little flirt! That, and because my photographer is my coworker at Comcast he was making me laugh telling me about his vacation while he was shooting the pictures!!! It was kinda liberating though; by the time the shoot was over I was more worried about whether or not my makeup was running from the sweat (it was 92 degrees with 99% relative humidity and not a single cloud) than anything!!!
Needless to say, summer has arrived in Memphis with a vengeance!!!
OMG -- you won't catch me dead in Houston right now; until they get all the thugs and criminals that ran there after Hurricane Katrina out of there I would be scared to walk down the street by myself!! Find out where it is during the conference; if it's in Houston count me out -- I would rather meet somewhere else like Orlando or Miami!!!
Hi Cheryl,
I can't believe how long it's been since I was on here. I don't know what happened..school, I guess. Wow. I just wanted to stop by, say hi, and see how you're doing. I hope all is well!
Great! This seems like an exciting and supportive network. I just wanted to inform you that your blog post has appeared on http://blog.ning.com/. You can find a permanent link to the post here. Good luck with the network!
Lol, how many wigs? Ohhh . . . I dunno, they are laying all over the house so its hard to count! I can think of 5 that I wear more often than not.
I am getting to KY on thursday, I was going to be there on wednesday, but there is an audition in town that I want to be here for, so I changed my flights so I could make it. Really want the part of Peter Pan, so I am willing to miss the inital meet and greet thing for a chance at it!
What kind of stuff happens at the NAAF conference? I'm thinking of going next year. I couldn't make the plans for it this year because we are taking a trip to NY for New Year's Eve at the end of 2008. I'm excited about that!
Would they have an itinerary for the weekend with speakers and a banquet or sightseeing around the area? From your pictures it looks like they hold a dance.
Thank you very much for the nice welcome words! I like it "here" already:) It would be nice to get to know others with alopecia, and this seems to be the right place.
Thanks,
Silje
Yeah, its Thursday evening. Depending on how late it goes, I may make it. I am also going to be helping with the marketplace stuff, I have a friend that will be selling stuff, and I am a very good salesperson so I have been recruited! Lol, working as a tour guide at this tiny museam in the middle of nowhere in the mountains, I sold this random box set of encyclopedias to this guy for $300!! They thought they would never sell it, it had been there for over 10 years! LOL!!
Hi Cheryl. Now its very close =) Im off for Louisville in 6 days. Im so excited. Tonight were having a meeting with the Stockholm group here in Sweden.
Hi Cheryl,
You were my first contact and I can't express how grateful I am. I've been so down lately since I've only just begun my symptons and I can't tell you how much it meant to see your smiling face. There is just so much info that I need and I'm sure you and others in this group can help lead me down this very "different" path.
I'm glad I'm here too. What's hard for me is that my "friends" don't look at me anymore. I told them when this first started happening is to let me know if I had bald spots showing in the back of my head to please let me know and nobody said anything. I purchased a mirror last night and have this huge bald spot in the back of my head and no one said anything. Maybe I'm really sensitive, I don't know. My question is...when do you make the decision to go ahead and shave your head?
