About Me:
I'm an artist and author living in Portland, Oregon. I've had aa for about 45 years. My award-winning book, "If Your Hair Falls Out, Keep Dancing!" is still available at a number of online sources including Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Written a few years ago, it's not completely up to date on medical findings, but these are readily available on this site.

Here are a couple of reviews: This "how-to" book provides a much needed text on dealing with emotional and cosmetic aspects of hair loss, whether from alopecia areata or chemotherapy. It details where to find and how to use products for compensating with this loss. It is written in the same bold and bright style that characterizes LeslieAnn's illustrations." -Janet Roberts, M.D., Portland Oregon

"This book is helpful, hopeful, funny and fabulous. It's full of practical advice about wigs, intimate encounters, the inappropriate questions from strangers, and other issues you face when every day is a bad hair day. Women with alopecia, LeslieAnn Butler is your new best friend " -Margie Boul , Columnist, The Oregonian ..

"An essential read, whether you've lost hair, or care about someone who has. Leave it to Leslie Ann to bring humor and glamour to a difficult topic. She is a living testament that the lack of flowing locks is no reason not to live your most glamorous and joyful life. Be inspired and uplifted by this remarkable woman's personal journey." -Nita Lina Howard, Author of A Woman's Journey is Her Legacy

I wrote "If Your Hair Falls Out, Keep Dancing!" to help other people -- particularly women and girls --and it's one that I wish I had been able to find when I discovered I had alopecia years ago.

I have stumbled through all the stages of grief (feeling guilty because, after all, there are worse things than alopecia), figuring out how to look normal, bouncing from one treatment to another, buying and ruining or rejecting dozens of wigs, losing every single hair on my body, figuring out how to tell guys I was dating, living in fear of the wind and someone touching my head…all in all, going from heartbreak to acceptance to joy and confidence. And it's all in the book, along with experiences of others, advice on wigs, makeup, products, treatments -- and how you can celebrate your life with alopecia areata, go after your dreams, and know you're not alone."

I read the whole book last night! It definitely is helping to consider whether or not I feel like continuing treatments or not.....injections and squaric acid. I know, isn't that cool that I found your book at the library? It's the Wilsonville library that has it....they just got it in November. I live in Lake Oswego....7.5 years now. My dermatologist has told me about Janet...I have not contacted her yet because there really isn't anything different I can do about treatments. But, I am interested in support groups for sure. I contacted NAAF and they gave me the name and number of a lady here in PDX but she isn't currently running any support groups.....OY, it's a bit of a breezy day her today. I almost wore a hat but I think the hairspray is holding everything in place. FYI, I love the story in your book about the car accident and the hairpiece falling off into the woman's lap. It's a rat!!!!! HILARIOUS!!!!!

Ordered your book from Amazon today. I'm looking for some encouagement. as I just got a second opinion from doctors at UW Madison...they said it is rare for someone with universalis to have their hair come back. My husband and kids have been great about the alopecia, but for the past year I have had a little bit of hope. Now that is gone. I have a good wig, but I don't like to wear it. Sometimes I have dreams at night that my hair is coming back.

Thank you! for the information, I will try to obtain your book.

    Hi LeslieAnn,
We had a pretty hard morning. She woke up with hair everywhere and tons came out in the shower again. She was crying and scared. I just saw that you have a book. Is this something that she can relate to at nine years old or is it more of a book for me to read? Any information you can give me, I'd be grateful.
  • Lee

    Hi LeslieAnn,
I just got your book and I love it so far! Love your outlook. Very helpful! I am up to the dating part. I have been dating someone for about 6 months now who is very supportive...I am going to lend him your book when I am finished. Thanks!!

Hey Leslie Ann, I received your book last week from the UK!! Finally. I can't wait to read it. I'm just kind of stressed at the moment so I might find some time over the christmas holidays. Here in Germany we're off for 3 days and all the stores are shut and all cities look like gost towns!!! Crazy.

I still don't know about he haircolour. As I told you I have a Noriko in Vanilla Lush. I totally like it but I'd like to have my hair a little bit lighter the next time. So if I order a Rene of Paris in Vanilla Lush, that might be the hair colour I want. I think that'S what you said. Rene of Paris is a bit lighter than Noriko. I just sent the wig I received back to the store in the USA. The colour was gold blond and I was too unhappy with that.

Hey Leslie Ann, thankyou for the sweet comment. I'll definitely give your book a look! By the way, my friend has exactly the same breed of kitty as you. Your cat looks identical to his. Those cats have sooooo much fur I often find myself wondering if I could make a wig out of it lol!
  • Stephanie Jacquelyn

Thanks for the note. I'm hanging tough.. it's kind of been my mantra lately.

I've got your book on my Christmas list this year. I look forward to reading it soon. Hope all is well!

  • Nicole

    Hi LeslieAnn,

I am waiting for your book to arrive anyday now :-) I cannot wait to read it. I know it will be inspirational and help me face alopecia.
  • Kimberly

    Hello LeslieAnn,

My husband and I are doing well so far. He developed a small bald patch about 2 years ago and it has been growing and spreading since. The patches are now growing in completly gray hair, and he is not received any treatment yet since we currently do not have any medical coverage. I think in my husbands case, something has triggered the Alopecia such as diet or stress. Hopefully we'll get to a doctor soon. Thanks for your comment and I hope I can get your book soon
  • Ali T

I will be looking into getting your book - I am so amazed that you are all out there and that there is so much help and support, I really didnt know it was there and I felt like the only person in the world who is going through this- how ridiculous!!!!!!!

    Thanks for responding

    Hi Leslie!
It's been a while since we've chatted. I just wanted to say that I saw your video clip about your new book the other day. I was touched that you metioned my jello story (and that you said I'm still in my twenties lol!) You're a jewel! I was so impressed by your interview. Not only are you beautiful, but I saw that you are a very sweet and genuine person. Keep up the good work in raising more awarness while inspiring us all. God bless! Sarah:-)

    Hi Leslie,
I haven't been on the site in a while, but I want you to know I finally found your book. I went into the two big book stores, Barnes & Noble and -- I forgot the other one, but one said they could order it and the other one said they can no longer get it. So I found it on Amazon.com. I haven't finished it, but it's a great book.
Sorry I missed the luncheon, but it's hard for me to get into the city myself. I'm not familiar with it and don't know my way around. I really wanted to go. I hope there is another one around here soon, but not in the city.
Hope you're doing ok. My hair stated to come back and now the whole top came out again. I don't get it. I still have it in the back. Makes no sense at all.
    Debbie

Hey LeslieAnn, thanks for the kind words. I'll definitely have to check out your book-- it looks really neat. Hope all is well on your end. :)
  • Tyla

Hello, nice to hear that you wrote a book :) congragulations! How is it possible to get your book for those who dont live in USA?
  • Patti Burkholder

Hi Leslie ....sometimes I'd rather listen then talk. I'm doing well nearing my 5 years of hair loss. I 've handled it well and try to let others know about alopecia. Most people are kind and my community is very supporting. This is a family thing for me grandfather dad and sister. I'm so gratful it's not something that's going to take me but it is something I must accept. I've learned no need to waste time in the negative lane make way for learning new things about myself. I chose to be bald most of the time from the begining. My wig is great when it gets cold and for a new do but... So I need to read the book it sounds great and would be nice to share with others.
  • James

LeslieAnn is your book geared more towards helping woman? Either way I think it is incredible of you to tackle this issue for others. Cheers!
  • Katya

Sorry I haven't written sooner. I am amazed at how happy and beautiful you and everyone looks. Actually no one knows except my chldren and a few friends that I have no hair! Being a hairdresser I have been able to find beautiful wigs, got my eyebrows tatooed, I use great fake eyelashes everyday. Soon I will post a picture and have more time to talk. Going out of town for a week in a couple of days. I'll get your book when I get back. Ellen
  • jackie

I am fine today...my daughter is busy living her life so it is a good day. She is a beauty like you (inside and out) and will figure this out but it does have a long shadow, this hair loss. Thank you so much for your concern and I know your book will soon be on my shelf. I am hoping that soon Jenny will be on this site to know wonderful people like you. Thanks again, Jackie
  • GENNY

  • Emma-Louise

    Hi Leslie Ann
    Thanks For The Message
    I'm doing OK, thank you.
I'm not sure if I should be signed up to this site because I'm not sure I have alopecia because I've not had it diagnosed. My mum works at my Doctors as a receptionist so my Doctor could tell my mum.
I haven't been going to the hairdressers much because I'm scared of what people will say and think. Me and my mom go to the Hairdressers together, so I notice that none of my mum's hair fall out, so that's why I keep going round and round in my head saying I do have alopecia.
  • Flin

Hi LeslieAnn and thank you for your message and the information about the book. I have alopecia totalis a few months now and before I had areata for almost 3 years. It is so difficult for me, everything happened so fast. I really don't know what to do.Thanks for everything anyway.
  • JoDeanna

Thank you Leslie! I will call my local bookstore today. Love your photos!
  • Donna

    Hi Lesley,
Thank you for the warm welcome. I look forward to getting to know you. Congratulations on your book, that's quite an acheivement.
  • Sherrie Laurie

Hi LeslieAnn....thank you for the welcome...since I found Alopecia world I feel like I have found a whole family of people that truly understand...it has been so refreshing and encouraging. I can't wait to read your book.
  • Natalie

Hi LeslieAnn, thank you for you comment, and i will definitely take a look at your book when I'm feeling a little better, at the moment I'm having a great deal of trouble accepting what might/might not happen to me. I'm petrified!!! I'm sure with some more time I will come to terms with it, at the moment all this seems a little sereal. Thank you for taking the time to contact me. xxxxxx
  • porcelinh

  • Pamela Schlosser

    Hi LeslieAnn,
Thank-you for your message. My daughter and I were going through your pictures. They are beautiful. Maygan Loves your blonde hair.
My daughter is 10, I think that your book would help her through the emotions.
I think sometimes that it is harder for me to see her go through this. Do you think that it is normal that I feel I need to be there where ever she goes,? She lately has been starting to hold my hand in public. She has that insurecrity at school too, since her long hair was a part of her! she could always hide behind her hair. But I feel I have to be there to protect her. Is that crazy? So I feel that maybe your book might just help her ,find her old self by using humor and more knowledge about the hair loss. Is your book avaliable in Chapters book stores?
  • ALLY

Actually I have been looking for your book after I researched it online. I looked at our local borders and they didn't have it so I am going to have to order it online. Thank you so much for your message it is so nice to be able to chat with other people who are going through the same things. No one really knows how losing your hair feels until it happens to you.
