I have been living with alopecia since 1991. Throughout the years, I have had alopecia areata and alopecia totalis. My life is not over, so there is still time for alopecia universalis. ;-) I have had many ups and down and find that I always come out on the other side standing tall.
It has always been a given for me to reach out to others with alopecia. I just did it naturally. I became involved in our local support group in Montreal, participated in the annual conferences of the National Alopecia Areata Foundation (NAAF), and also served as president of the Quebec Alopecia Areata Foundation (QAAF).
Someone once asked me what I planned to do after I moved to the USA. My initial thought was to attend or start a support group in Michigan, but I eventually settled on the wonderful idea of creating Alopecia World with my husband, rj jones, who was my fiancé at the time (2008).
On a personal note, I like to blend femininity and strength. A woman can be strong and physically capable as well as soft and feminine. For a long time, I thought I "had" to be one or the other, and I had a hard time finding my place. Blending both is very gratifying, indeed.
I also like to keep active. It does not have to be extreme. It can be a bike ride, walking, painting a room in the house, or cleaning the garage.
In April 2008, I married rj, a very special man that supports me in my alopecia and is the catalyst and the great mind behind the research and design of this site.
Please feel free to "friend" rj and me: We would love to make your acquaintance.
Yes! We finally got to meet. Thanks for stopping by and introducing yourselves. I met so many wonderful people at this year's conference. It was really fun! Talk soon.

Cheryl! It was sooooo great to meet you and RJ and to hang out with you guys. You two have opened lots of doors for all of us. If there's ever anything I can do, just let me know.
peace & love

Hiya Cheryl, and Ta for the friend add!
Sorry I hijacked your discussion about explaining alopecia to young kids, but I couldn't resist! And it coulda gone either way - you'd have gone along with it, smiling benignly... or thrown me off the site... :)
Of course, I'm not actually writing any of this, having been Got At and silenced by your Men In Black Wigs. So you must have imagined it all.... oo-ee-oo!!! :)
Why, thank you for the compliment, Ma'am.... and for letting me witter on and talk total tripe on your most excellent website! I shall, indeed, endeavour to continue in this vein.... as the vampire said to the actress ;)
Oh, and by the way - hope you don't mind me saying that, after perusing your pix, you're one of those peeps that most definitely looks fantastic bald - much better than with hair! (You can tell RJ that I'm sorry, but I just don't fancy him... no offence, but he's just not my type.... :) )
I am great! Thank you for having such a great website! I went from depressed and upset to positive and accepting of my alopecia. I wish I could have attended the NAAF conference. Have a wonderful and safe weekend.
Thanks so very much Cheryl for the wonderful comment but mostly "KUDOS" for the wonderful support system you and your husband birthed! I only wished that I had found it earlier but as the saying goes "its never too late".... Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!
Hi Cheryl! Where can I get that awesome t-shirt that you have on, welcome to my world? It's so great! Hope all is well and you are enjoying your summer!

Hi Cheryl. Thank you for the info on Canadian groups. Also, Taylor-Jean has decided to be active herself on AW and we went into her profile to put in her info instead of mine. When we went to put in her year of birth, it will only go as far as 1997. She was born in 2000. How can we put in her correct b-day?? Thanks, Cynthia
Thanks. I've been going through a mixture of emotions since I was diagnosed in April with CCCA. Shaving my head at even this early state, felt so liberating. I feel like I'm in control of this and that I no longer have to worry about when is more going to fall out. Although, I'm not completely bald yet, I still take comfort in knowing that I am in control and adjusting to my alopecia. I am so glad to be a part of such an inspirational and beautiful group of women as yourself. I truly, from the bottom of my heart, thank you and your husband for creating this community for us.
Hi Cheryl, when I saw your name some how I new it was you. Although we have never met, I used to recieve your newsletters. I remember you used to hold meeting at the Montreal childrens Hosital once upon a time. That's how long I've been dealing with Alopecia. Are you in Lachine still? I'm happy to reconnect. I was curious on the latest, any breakthroughs? My wish!!!! Take care, Rosa.
Thanks, Cheryl, it's been a good decision with exception to leaving 4 daughters there, that part has been challenging, but it's getting better day by day. We live in a great area with good people with a nice quiet country life. I couldn't ask for more.
Hi Cheryl, wow!! how life changes!!! I'm glad to hear your well. Your man sounds like a gem. Life is good, isn't it? Mine is, although I would love to be cured, life has gone on. I am a mother of three and my family love's me any which way. It's awesome. I've learned to accept what life brings. It could always be worse. I've learned to look at life in a positive light. There is always worse. My sister has a son that is autistic and another son that was diagonsted with cancer. Thank God....for the MTL children's hopital he is still with us today and is my son's best cousin. I can't ask for more.Life is short we must make the best of everything. Thank you for what you do. It keeps people thinking positive. That is what is needed in life. God Bless you and your hubby!!!
That is too funny for you have been on my mind too. :) Did you catch the 20/20 seg with Kayla? I love her smile. I said to my husband wow, this is great press for alopecia. The people who watched that did not know it existed know now! What are you doing for the rest of the summer? If you are ever in NY please come stop by! Pool is the perfect temp. My girls are eating up the last weeks of summer. One month today until school starts. :(
Have my NAAF meeting tomorrow night so I'm looking forward to that. I had a woman come to my group last month that was 65 and never met another alopecian in her life. Can you imagine? She was lovely and drove an hour from out east in wine country to see us. She's coming back tomorrow. Another that just took the eye tattoo leap and she loves them so I can't wait to give her a hug as well. I've told NAAF so many times what they have given people to their lives, it just keeps giving back. Just like you and RJ. I log on and see all the happy proud faces (like I'm sure everyone else does) and that starts my day on a positive bald note. I carry those faces with me for the day. Pioneer woman cooks used to be my home page now it's bookmarked and aw is. (BTW) if you have never hopped on that site it's a must. That's one woman I would love to meet.
Talk to you soon!!!!

So great to meet you and RJ at the Indy Conf. Love looking thru all the photos from that weekend. Miss all my new friends. The upside is that I'm starting a local support group here in Capital Region of Albany NY...hope you're having a good summer. BTW-how do we order AW t-shirts like the one in one of your pics?
Hi Cheryl, thanks for stopping in by, I'm good, how about you? I have two new grandsons, they're 10 months old and 8 months old, I'm having so much fun being Nana to grandsons. My three granddaughters ages 10, 9, and 8 are growing up, life is good!
Hey Cheryl, great to see that you stopped by!
I am doing really well. Isn't it amazing how much this site has grown? I remember how I thought it was a big deal when you hit the 2,000 mark.
I'm still plugging along and trying to help out when and where I can.
I wish RJ had a CD out of his music. I just LOVE it.
Blessings and light!
Hi, Cheryl! You're welcome and thank you for accepting my friend request! I'm wonderfully blessed, richly and wonderfully made! Thanks for asking! How are you?
Yes I did!! N 5 of the 6 grandkids live here along with there moms plus my 2 sons!! Yes its very busy & loud and stressful most days!! Its like a party everyday!! haha
Hahaha. I love the story about the dermatologist! My dermatologist looks at my like a science project. She says, 'you're the fastest pace case I've ever seen.' Great. So I know more about the disease from Google that she does from medical school. This is going to turn out well. She took a biopsy from my scalp and the results came back thinking I had syphillis. Great. The whole time I kept sayin, 'Hey I had alopecia areata when I was a kid. I'm pretty sure this has something to do with that.' She was so in tuned to ruling everything else out. I kinda feel like if your own answer is right vs the doctor, you shouldn't have to pay for the tests or the office visit. lol
Yes! We met in 2002-2004 at the NAAF Conferences (St Louis and Los Angeles). I am originally from PEI but I now live in Waterloo, ON with my husband. What a wonderful support network you have created for the Alopecia Community! Congratulations! Hope we have the opportunity to connect again sometime in the future!
No problem! You look so beautiful, radiant and happy! Congratulations on your marriage and move to the US! You have been busy. I was married in PEI this past July - a very special day for us. My husband and I are hoping to attend the NAAF conference in 2011. My younger sister is currently experiencing major hair loss which has motivated me to start re-connecting with a community of support. I am hoping to get her connected.
