For a Reason Or For Style, Is the Question

Him: "Girl you are wearin' that bald head, is that for a reason or just for style."

Me: First I give him the side eye, then I reply "its because I look so good wearing it, as you just pointed out."  I continue what I am doing and pay him no extra attention.

Him:  "Haha, your sassy; I like you!  Do you shave it yourself?"

Me: Thinking to myself, really dude?!?!  "I don't have to shave it"  I decide to take the educational route and tell him…

Gentle moments

I teach the English Learners in 5 schools in my district. The other day, I was walking through the kindergarten hall and a boy started laughing and pointing and shouted that I looked like a boy. I have alopecia universalis and seldom cover my head.I knelt down and had a gentle but honest conversation about what would be a better way to express his interest and observations. I recently became involved in a book project about breast cancer survivors. Although I don't have cancer, those with Alopceia often are approached with that very question. The author invited me to participate in order to represent one of the struggles many women go through in dealing with this disease. I'm also thrilled at the fact that this book will help bring more awareness about this condition. It was very empowering to write my story and recall the stages I went through on my journey.… Continue

Hello friends.

I've been a hairless wonder for the last 10 years. Alternating between Totalis and Universalis. The last 2 years I've gone "au-naturel" and go out bald headed most of the time. I'm tired of hiding the way I look under hats and/or wigs. It's been amazingly freeing to go out bald headed...and tho it took some getting used to being stared at, it's been kinda fun. (To be honest, I just tell myself people stare coz I'm so "gorgeous" they can't help themselves. HA HA HA).… Continue

The cancer question -- I finally got it

Well, it was bound to happen to me, and today was the day.

Cheryl and I went for a walk and stopped at a local restaurant to order water.

While I was paying, Cheryl stepped away to get a couple of straws just as an older woman tried to touch her and say, "God bless your heart."

Realizing that I saw her, the woman smiled at me and asked without pause, "Does she shave her head, or does she have cancer?"

I immediately responded, "Neither. She has alopecia areata, a…
