Embracing Empowerment: Sharing Your Alopecia Journey

Living with alopecia presents a unique set of challenges. The emotional turmoil, the physical changes, and the constant search for acceptance can challenging. However, I believe that every individual's experience is a testament to strength and resilience. By sharing your personal alopecia story, you have the power to inspire and support others who may be…

A Wisdom Story - The Three Hairs

I love this story so I thought I would share it!!

A Wisdom Story - The Three Hairs

There once was a woman who woke up one morning, looked in the mirror, and noticed she had only three hairs on her head. "Well," she said, "I think I'll braid my hair today." So she did and she had a wonderful day.

The next day she woke up, looked in…

Steve 2.0

Hi everyone,

I am new to this site as off yesterday but not new to alopecia unfortunately. I am a 24 years old male, currently living in the highlands of Scotland and I have had alopecia for roughly 6 years now. At first my alopecia started off as AA and then slowly developed over to AT where it currently still sits. I have had patches off slight regrowth but nothing major. Currently I have lost about 90% off my scalp hair, 50% off my eyelashes and my eyebrows are roughly…

My alopecia story in a bit more detail

So my story starts way back in 1994, well 1995 really but some incident/situation in 1994 might have contributed to my acquiring AU. In case you don’t know, AU stands for Alopecia Universalis. It is the most severe and rarest of the main forms of Alopecia.

So my hair loss started in January 1995, and my long (about mid-back) brown locks departed rather quickly and efficiently. It went in a diffuse, even pattern. At one stage, when maybe 80-90% was gone, I looked a lot like the…

My alopecia story!

Diagnosis

In 1998, when I was in 4th grade, my mom noticed a small patch of hair loss while she was brushing my hair one morning. She told my dad (a physician) about it, and he decided to take me to a dermatologist. The doctor told my parents that I had alopecia areata, gave me the steroid injections (every 8 year old's nightmare), told me to apply a cream (looking back, I believe it was an irritant) and come back every few weeks.

I don't remember my initial…

My story

Hello. My name is Justin Dawson. I am 15 years old & have had Alopecia for about 1 year and 4 months now. It all started in mid February of 2011. I was in my room texting some friends while chatting with my little brother, Brendan. You know how when you are texting, you look with your head down most of the time? Well, that's what I was doing. My brother Brendan pointed out a very small circular bald spot on the crown of my head. I looked in the mirror, but it was too inadequate to see. I…

I recently became involved in a book project about breast cancer survivors. Although I don't have cancer, those with Alopceia often are approached with that very question. The author invited me to participate in order to represent one of the struggles many women go through in dealing with this disease. I'm also thrilled at the fact that this book will help bring more awareness about this condition. It was very empowering to write my story and recall the stages I went through on my journey.… Continue

Another "my story"

I went bald when I was four. As far as ages to get an incurable illness go, four isn't bad. I have photos of silky blonde locks, but don't remember what I lost. I think that's a good thing.

It's pretty much the usual story - bald patch, size of a coin, doctors, comb-overs, blood tests (I still have the toy stuffed cat the red cross people gave be 'cause I wouldn't stop crying for those.) We tried a bunch of stuff - herbs, massage oils, etc. I have to thank my mum, a GP, that she refused… Continue

Would anyone like to speak at my school for a program???

Hello everyone!

So as I said before, I attend Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ. I would like to have a program (event) next semester (spring 09) focused on "What is beautiful." (got the idea from a vid I saw). I think that it would be a great idea to spread some awareness on campus. I've only met one person (my roomate) that knows what Alopecia is, and that's because her sister has it. Basically, I would like to have a panel also including maybe 3 young ladies and maybe a man,… Continue

Misfortune can become fortune

An old man and his son lived in an abandoned fortress on the side of a hill. Their only possession of value was a horse. One day the horse ran away. The neighbours came by to offer sympathy. "That's really bad!" they said. "How do you know?" asked the old man.

The next day, the horse returned, bringing with it several wild horses. The old man and his son shut them all inside the gate. The neighbours hurried over. "That's really good!" they said. "How do you know?" asked the old… Continue

The Samurai and the Zen Master - A Japanese Story

A certain sumurai had a reputation for impatient and hot-tempered behaviour. A Zen Master, well known for his excellent cooking, decided that the warrior needed to be taught a lesson before he became any more dangerous. He invited the samurai to dinner.

The samurai arrived at the appointed time. The Zen master told him to make himself comfortable while he finished preparing the food. A long time passed. The samurai waited impatiently. After a while he called out: "Zen Master - have… Continue
