The strangest reaction I've experienced...

This may be the strangest thing that's ever happened to me! I was at the store, and I had a bandanna on. A woman that I recognized, but couldn't place, came up to me and said, "why did you shave your head?". I steeled myself and offered the same, polite response that I didn't shave my head, that I have alopecia, which makes my hair follicles "go on strike".

She proceeded to tell me that I couldn't have alopecia. That alopecia would make me lose my eyebrows and eyelashes and not just my hair. I simply explained that there are multiple types of alopecia, and that not all people with alopecia lose their eyebrows. She continued to argue with me and go on about how a kid she used to babysit had alopecia and had no eyebrows.

I finally just walked away, but she FOLLOWED me, telling me that I must be lying or looking for attention and that I don't know how people with alopecia suffer.

I'm still shaking my head and incredulous over this...

what the heck? Hopefully she will go home and look it up and realize how rediculous she was.

Wow...thats incredible. Yeah hopefully she does realize how she needs to do some more research before she acts like she knows everything!

I am not sure what I would have done if I were in that situation! I probably wouldn't have kept my cool even though I would have tried!

I think you handled it a lot better than I would have.I probably would have told her that I find her ignorance on the subject offensive and to go home and do her homework on the sibject before preaching to the choir.

Thanks everyone. I was just feeling like WOW over it. I was hurt too, because the crap we're going through is REAL and it sucks!

You handled that really well Reen. Great self control! I've been confronted by know-it-alls like this but never in such an obnoxious manner. As my Grandmother used to say, "There's a cracked egg in every dozen."

Incredible. I think it was rather restrained of you to walk away. I would have gotten my phone out, used the net on it, googled alopecia, and shown her the definitions.

I can feel how frustrated you must have been.

Reen, this is Rachel's mom and you have incredible self control.......I, being much older than you, .....would have slapped her really hard and then laughed and walked away. Can you just read the headlines..........Woman slapped in public for being stupid! You can't cure stupid! You hang in there, there is this saying......you reap what you sow......she will reap stupidity!
