The strangest reaction I've experienced...

This may be the strangest thing that's ever happened to me! I was at the store, and I had a bandanna on. A woman that I recognized, but couldn't place, came up to me and said, "why did you shave your head?". I steeled myself and offered the same, polite response that I didn't shave my head, that I have alopecia, which makes my hair follicles "go on strike".

She proceeded to tell me that I couldn't have alopecia. That alopecia would make me lose my eyebrows and eyelashes and not just my hair. I simply explained that there are multiple types of alopecia, and that not all people with alopecia lose their eyebrows. She continued to argue with me and go on about how a kid she used to babysit had alopecia and had no eyebrows.

I finally just walked away, but she FOLLOWED me, telling me that I must be lying or looking for attention and that I don't know how people with alopecia suffer.

I'm still shaking my head and incredulous over this...

That was just uncalled for. I'm sorry you even had to have that conversation with her. I don't know what i would've said but i do know that sometime during that week i would've cried a heap. So I hope you're okay and if you ever see her again you should just say hi and walk away... maybe even laugh hysterically =]

OMGoodness!! I'd of had a VERY hard time keeping my composure!! Were you at Wal-Mart?? I swear all the weirdo's shop at Wal-Mart :) J/K! I know it's NOT even nice to think ... But wasn't there a part of you that just wanted to SCREAM at her! And just for ONE MINUTE put her in your shoes ... THEN maybe she'd get over herself and her ignorance!

Way to Go!! You handled yourself MUCH better than good 'ol Sybil here :)

Thanks everyone! I swear, it was so weird, and so hurtful at the same time. i was really upset about it, but i didn't cry until later that night.

it just made it that much harder for me to want to go out in public without my wig.

You handled that very well. Did you ever recall where you had seen her before?
