Alopecian artist , Molly Tuttle wins 2023 Grammy Award!

The immensely talented singer-songwriter-guitarist, who was born and raised in Palo Alto, led her band Golden Highway to Grammy victory in the best bluegrass album category with 2022’s “Crooked Tree” on Feb. 5, 2023.

“Crooked Tree” is Tuttle’s third studio album. But, Tuttle has had a string of success at recent award shows. Beyond the Grammys, she won female vocalist of the year at the 2022 International Bluegrass Music Awards and “Crooked Tree” was named album of the year at the 2023 International Folk Music Awards.

On her blog Molly shares her alopecia story.

She was diagnosed a 3 and within a year she had progressed to Alopecia Universalis. Like many, her mom researched many treatments. But at 3 she wasn’t interested and her parents respected her wishes and kept her off medications. But as she got older she noticed that people treated her differently.

She found refuge at the Alopecia Areata Foundation (NAAF) conference and it was a place that bald was normal and celebrated. At the conference she felt herself surrounded by beautiful people with alopecia and expressed that:

“Throughout the week I was surrounded by beautiful women and men who truly loved themselves and wouldn’t grow their hair back if they could. I began to realize that if I felt ashamed about being bald I was also casting shame on these people who clearly had no tolerance for that. We all had strikingly similar experiences living with alopecia. I recognized that it must be possible for me to start accepting and celebrating what made me unique just as they had. Slowly I felt parts of myself unfolding and softening.”

“Having alopecia has taught me that there is nothing “normal” about everyone being the same. Humans are beautifully diverse. We all have work to do to make our world a safer and more welcoming place for everyone regardless of appearance, race, age, sexuality, gender identity, disability, or anything else that makes us human.”

Congratulation Molly, we will be watching you!
