Many things have changed in my life over the last month been trying to take it all in stride. Picked up the synthetic wig I ordered yesterday & was very disappointed. When I put it on, it looks totally fake...want nothing to do with it, just want my hair back. Can talk to my husband, close friends and family yet they will never completely understand although they try...

On top of all the above, I'm really ready to make some positive changes in my life. Chill out on drinking, eat better, workout yet can't bring myself to make these changes.

I need prayers. love to you all.

I'm sorry your having such a bad time.
Are you sure the wig does look fake? When you first get one, they do feel and look fake but you have to remember that you're more self concious and people in the street won't be looking at your hair closely. At the same time I know how you might not want to wear it if you're not comfortable. I wear rene paris amore (which I got on the NHS) and I don't think they are too expensive compared to some wigs. I was really paranoid at first but no one has ever been able to tell that they are wigs. People only know becuase I change mine round everyday.
As for fellow family what can we expect them to do but try?
Are there any local support groups in your area, it can really help to have a moan to someone with alopecia.
Don't punish yourself about making changes. Us women always want to and stuff like alopecia makes us want to even more. I'm sure you're beautiful and don't need to make any of those changes in a hurry. I mean most of us could probably do with doing some more exercise, eating less junk, for our health but how many of us do. I certainly don't. I swim but undo the positive effects by eating too much chocolate and crisps!

If you toussle (spelling?) the hair a bit it looks more natural and fun. Also, go to a professional wig salon to cut the bangs or thin the hair...a pro can give tips on styles. I ALWAYS go to a real shop to try on many styles and to look at construction, color in the sun outside the shop, etc....NEVER online, unseen, untried-on: I have too much at stake in my profession to have scalp show through!

Hi Dana,

I'm sorry to hear that you're feeling really down lately. Remember that, you may be lonely but you're never alone. Especially when you vent your frustration and sharing your story on here because at any place at anytime, someone is reading your message and thinking of you. We're nothing if we cant be true to ourselves. Be yourself and try to take things a step at a time. You're not alone.

Stay well and do keep us updated!

Hi Dana,

I'm sorry your feeling lonely and I will keep you in my prayers.

I understand about wanting to make positive changes in your life. Just remember that change doesn't come easily, it takes time. Maybe you can start by taking it one step at a time working out once a week and gradually increasing the time or just doing it today. Add some fruit to your diet. Just remember Rome wasn't built in a day.(I know kinda cheesy). You will make the changes when your ready and you'll have up and down days where you might not want to do these changes and that's fine. The more you get in the habit of doing it the more it will come more natural.

I totally understand your dislike about the synthetic wig. I try not to order my wig online b/c a lot of times I am not happy with it. If you did not like the synthetic wig maybe you can try a human hair wig that will seem more real. Maybe you and a friend or family member can go wig shopping near you and make a day or adventure out of it. Yesterday I bought my first lace front wig with my best friend. It was the first time I ever took off my wig in front of my best friend. It was fun. She tried on wigs and so did I which made it fun and made me more comfortable. We had to hit up several stores until I found one that I liked. In the end I purchased a human hair lace front wig that was so natural looking that even I thought my hair magically grew back :)

Dana,
Hi, I'm new to this site, and was drawn to your blog, I'm sorry that your having difficulty making the changes you know will in the end help you, this is typical of depression, if it is not letting up, I would consider seeing your Dr. about it, but I think we have all gone through this at one time or another, dealing with this disease, I have AA and I have had pretty big loses, I lose, it stops, I'm full of bald smooth spots for months, I fear the wind, and then mercifully I grow back, and for the last 7 yrs or so this process has been going on. Right now I'm losing, and regrowing at the same time, which has never happened before, but that's AA for you, well I can tell you everyday, I get up,comb the loose hairs out, wash my hair, comb out some more loose hairs, and check my expanding spots, now a routine like that can become pretty depressing, so I understand. I'm so glad that you want to make some really positive changes in your life, and I'm going to pray for you in that area as you asked, also will be praying for strength and comfort, you are not alone, but I know how difficult it is to talk to others who do not have this, they just can't get it, truly, and sometimes when I've talked about it with friends, and family, I get the feeling that they just don't want to hear it, and that hurts. I've never met another with this, have you? I think that would help, that's why this site is so wonderful. I hope your feeling better, please update. ((Hugs)) Christine.
