RE: Question for anyone that has had shots!!!!

Hi there all,
I was diagnosed back in August of 2008 and probably started hair loss back in March-April 2008. I did receive 3 treatments, shots on my scalp and the big shot in the butt. My last Big shot was back in October and the ones in the scalp were in November 2008 I was doing great until very recently. I lost a tiny bit if eyelashes, really small area and now I felt like I was shedding again more on one side. It's not really terrible shedding, but still I am so aware of when I loose hair. It's probably less the 100 a day depending if I wash it that day or not. Sometimes maybe 30-50 a day. Anyways, saw a small area that looking a little sparse on my temple again and went to get the injections on the area of the scalp. The doctor told me that my other Big shot was waring off and that's why I was probably loosing again but she said it looked ok too, so I'm wondering, why am I doing this?? Is my hair just doomed no matter what and this is a waste of time?? I didn't know that the Big shot lasted 6 months, as she stated. So I'm thinking, my hair was only coming back for that reason?? Now I'm screwed again?? Plus, she told me she wont even give my that shot because it's really bad for you. My other doctor, Dr Whiting, did give my 2 big shots back to back in 2008 and didn't tell me that was unsafe. He did say that he would give me too many in one year, but these doctors seem to have different approaches to AA. Was anyone else told that the only reason your hair comes back is because of the big shot and then you just need to give up if you loose hair again?? I'm so angry, hurt, and frustrated about this! Do I fight, give up, what??!! I'm just SO TIRED OF THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Any comments would be greatly appreciated. I know no one can predict AA but I need some feedback, good or bad!!! Thanks!

Hi Melissa, don't give up, hang in there! What is the "big shot"? I've never heard of that. Is it administered only to adults?

Oh how I know the frustration of alopecia and all the treatments. speaking from personal experience and dealing with several doctors, I would not go thru all of it (shots, creams, etc.) again. you know what they say, hind sight is 20/20, they are just treatments, they can help with regrowth, but depending on how aggressive the alopecia is at the time, your hair can and will still fall out. After many years of treatments myself, I honestly can say I felt much better after stopping all treatments. I consider it getting off the rollarcoaster ride and letting go, letting whatever happen, happen. I still to this day have to wear a wig, but that's ok. Alopecia is part of my life, part of who I am, and I am so thankful and blessed for so many things. First that I have overcome the need for treatments (and I don't think that is giving up) Second, that I have my health, family and so many more things. :-) My best to you in whatever you chose to do with treatments.

I understand your frustration and distress. I spent 7 years getting shots in my scalp, and for the last couple of years of that time, they were monthly. I used different creams. Finally, when I the bald areas were too big to have more shots, I tried oral Prednisone for a month. In the end, I could tell that nothing was going to stop the alopecia, and I just stopped all the treatments. It was the best decision for me.

I wish I could have told myself back then that everything would be all right...even if I did lose all my hair. Life goes on...I'm healthy and happy. Hang in there and good luck.
