Steroid injection side-effects? And other questions!

Hi there!

I'm Karli and I have had AA for almost 2 years now. I have been going to the derm for injection treatment once every 5-8 months and my hair has made a comeback in the sites of injection... However, I am finding new spots all over my head. I was wondering what long-term side effects could be caused by the injections, and if I should even keep going to the derm. What are some common short-term side effects? My derm never really talked to me much about the product was or what it could do...... and I have been googling a lot and haven't found much! Has anyone else had dermatologists who just seemed to... not care?

I am a college student and can't really afford to go every month or two to the derm... any suggestions? At this point I am giving up on trying to re-grow because it is so unpredictable.

I have another question: regarding hair donations. My total hair length will be perfect to cut and donate after the winter is over. However, a large portion of my hair is regrowth, and will not be of length to cut along with the bulk of my hair. How much bulk is needed to make a wig? I would really love to donate, I just hope there is enough long hair to do it! :)

I think regrowth is really unpredictable. I had injections, mine came back in, but it was a different color than the rest of my hair, (not too noticeable, I did, but others wouldn't) and now areas have grown an inch or two but seemed to stop there while others grew in 4 to 5 inches. Other spots have grown back without an injections (I didn't have insurance and couldn't afford to go) and for some spots the injections don't seem to do much, so I've got the same questions, which I guess wouldn't help you, except to maybe let you know that it's not just your head that's like that! Plus I think any amount of hair is welcome for donations, no matter how thick or thin your ponytail might be, I'm sure they're appreciative of it, but don't just take my word for it, you should ask the organization that you plan to donate to!

Hope some of this was helpful!

Hey Karli! I used to do the steroid injection.. short term side effects for me was that it left dents in my head at the injection site... and it is never really a good thing to have long term steroid use. I would get the injections and the hair would start to grow...but then I would loose another patch of hair. I ended up cutting my hair to my chin and the shaving the rest of it off....which was the best thing I ever did cause shortly after that I lost all of my hair.. I know it tough butyou grow to accept that this is the person that you are going to be :)

hi. my daughter had the same experience with the injections... regrowth at the injection sites & loss on other parts of her scalp/body. it was painful & expensive, and frankly a loosing battle. my daughter lost all her hair & remained that way for 2 years. what i really think caused her alopecia was a sever allergy to mold. her bedroom was in the basement of our house. after a life-threatening asthma attack we convinced her to move upstairs. she began taking lots & lots of Oreganol. her hair is growing back, she has growth on 90% of her head, and it's now shoulder length.

all the best to each one of you <3

I've had 3 "outbreaks" of AA and had injections all 3 times. I did not notice any side affects from the shots, and right now I've had 2 years of "normal" hair on my head:). That being said, I believe that shots or not, hair will do what it wants to do. Some of my regrowth was not where the shots were, so who knows. Good luck,
Susan

Hi Karlie
When I first lost my hair in 2000 completely I got three courses of steroid injections and my hair started to grow back. However, I moved location and had to wait for another appointment and that was 9 months and my hair fell out again and I heard that this happened to everyone who stopped having the injections I had no side effects only incredible soreness for three days that was after thrity injections. Three years ago I had to go on oral steroids for a bad chest infection and low and below my hair started growing back again when I stopped it fell out again. I went to my gp and he knows for years and I asked his advise about taking the steroids long time he strongly advised against it as the side effects over a long period of time would be lethal, basically my body would collapse but i would have a healthy head of hair, sorry to be so blunt but just felt I should warn you, Love Liz X

I spotted my first bald patch in February 2010 and then another spot a few weeks later. I went to the dermo in March and began cortizone shots. I had very little regrowth and more patches were showing up. I also didn't get much feedback from the doctor just.."I treat at least 10 people a day with alopecia" not alot of support. I stopped the shots after four months. The day after Thanksgiving 2010 I shaved my head and bought a wig of which I wore three times. I have a zillion hats and scarves and lots of funky earings. When the weather got warmer I eventually got the courage to take off the scarves...not an easy thing to do but quite freeing. I have let my hair grow for a while now but I still have bald patches and the hair that has grown in is completely grey (I did color my hair prior to alopecia). I don't know if it will ever grow in as thick as it was or if I will attempt to color the little I have it is so unpredictable and one never knows what will happen. I will say it becomes less stressfull once you accept and make the best of it. I know my hair was a very important part of who I was and I would love to have it back but I also like the short haircut I have now! If my hair begins to fall out as much as it did before, I will probably shave it again. One thing for sure...no more shots!

I have had aa since I was 5. I will be 27 Nov. 13th. I have aa there is nothing I can do about it. I have worn wigs my whole life. I will continue to wear them. I have heard such negatives about the injections. I just don't think the injections are worth it. Short term solution to a long term problem that is not going to go away. Be proud of who you are. I used to get so upset when someone would ask me if I wore a wig, but now i know its an opportunity to educate someone. There have been hard times but i truly feel it is a blessing because it has helped make me the loving caring compassionate person i am today. I guess I'm tryin to say in my opinion forget the shots.

Personally, I refused to get the shots. Just was not something I wanted to do since I had previously taken oral prednisone and it wasn't pretty. I made the choice to deal with my hairloss naturally and ramped up my already healthy diet. It wasn't so much that my hair grew back (which it didn't) as it was that I stopped the unhealthy internal process that caused me to lose it in the first place.
