The Alopecian Closet...Are you in or out?

Hello Alopecia World,

I wish there was a poll section on this site for such a question.

I am writing tonight in support of National Bald (now called International Alopecia Day).
This is an event for women with alopecia. The objective is to raise awareness and acceptance for bald women in society. What is asked of you is to organize, join or support a group of local alopecians and go bald for the day.

Please consider joining us and making this a day of celebration and unity.

Come out Come out wherever you are.... July 19 2009

In my "Announcing the National Bald Out!" video last April, I used the phrase "Come out of the wig closet!" NBO Day 2010 is Saturday, July 17. Join the National Bald Out Group here on AW. Mary

I love that! The Alopecian Closet! I've had AA since I was 5, I'm 34 now. I spent my life covering it up. My mother, as well as her intensions were, helped me to cover it up. She was, in a sense, telling me that there was something wrong with me. She would write notes to my teachers in school and ask them to sit me in the back of the class so that the other kids wouln't stare at it. I got to the point where I would use theatre make-up on the spots and then use hair spray to hold the hair over it. I would spend hours a day covering and worrying and worrying and worrying! I owe my acceptance to my dear friend, actor John Ronane. He's been my coach, my mentor and my father figure for almost 10years now. When I started training with him I never realized that my lack of persistence in acting was because of my fear of my AA. My fear of 'Hey, good actor...but has Alopecia..' Then I called him one day a couple of years ago and told him how badly it bothered me and he wrote me a letter several days later:
'Did I ever tell you of the time I was being interviewed for my first job, an shook so badly with uncontrollable nerves that I was sent hom and told to come back some other time; and spent my whole move career worrying more about nerves than working? Did I ever tell you of Rex Harrison's wife (name escapes me momentarily) and how she'd stagger around the dressing room vomiting throughout filming "This Sporting Life;" waiting in abject terror for the crew to reach her bit of any days shooting. Did I ever tell you of the actor (Robin Hawdon) who played Henry V when I played Hotspur; how HIS alopecia was a constant source of embarrassment to him- and how he finally determined that a genetic ailment- not of his choosing- was really nothing for him to be ashamed of, and if anyone noticed it they never mentioned it - BECAUSE THEY AND EVERYONE WHOSE EVER LIVED HAS SOMETHING ABOUT THEIR BODIES THAT BUGS THEM - ABOUT WHICH THEY CAN DO NOTHING!!!!
After that letter, I said fuck the alopecia, and shaved it off. And by the way, I've got a good lookin mellon!

if I came to the salon where I worked bald, my boss would kindly walk me into the back room and tell me to cover up. He can hardly speak to me and look me in the eye since I "came out of the closet"...but secretly at night, when my Alan snores.....i sneak off into the spare bedroom and take off my bandana and sleep in bald splendor!!!!!!!!!!!!

Shine on! A balding (non-Alopecian) man once asked me how I get my head so shiny. I told him I use a fine grade of sandpaper, (then I explained about alopecia). I think the tendency to make bad jokes is part of being Alopecian. ( ;-)

I'm in the closet when I am working at the salon as a massage therapist and doing business for my husbands' company. I'm out of the closet at my part time job, amongst my family and friends. I'll be ot of the closet with my Glowing Reflecting Head! Tee hee!
