What You Avoid Controls You; What You Face Frees You

Alopecia isn’t just about losing hair—it’s about losing control. When I first lost my hair, I didn’t hate the reflection staring back at me, but I feared how others would see me. So, I hid. I wore wigs not because I loved them, but because I was afraid not to.

The journey wasn’t linear. It took about five years—some days I felt brave, others exposed. Eventually, I grew tired of living for others and stopped hiding. Let me be clear: this isn’t about whether you wear wigs or not. It’s about the hiding. If you love wigs, rock them. If you prefer hats, scarves, or being bald, rock that too.

I understand this journey is different for everyone. I was fortunate to have supportive friends and family, but not everyone has that, and it can feel so much harder when you're walking this road alone. But you're not alone. There’s a whole community here of people who understand the fear of judgment. No matter how you present yourself—wig, no wig, hat, scarf—it’s not about the look. It’s about the freedom that comes from no longer hiding.

Here’s my challenge to you: healing doesn’t come from what’s on your head—it comes from what’s in your head. It’s about facing how others’ opinions make you feel. If you let them control how you feel about yourself, you’ll never truly be free.

Why Do We Obsess Over These Things?

So why do we get stuck in this cycle? Why does hair loss feel so overwhelming? Because it’s not just about hair—it’s about identity, control, and fear.

We obsess over things like hair loss because it taps into something deeper—self-worth and the fear of not being accepted. Society sets standards for beauty and normalcy, and when we fall outside those expectations, it can feel like we’re losing a part of ourselves.

But here’s the truth: the more we obsess, the more power we give it over our lives. When we can find a way to live our lives fully and continue to do what we love, alopecia fades into the background of our lives.

How to Overcome the Fear

So, how do you actually do that?

  1. Call Out the Lies – That little voice in your head telling you that you’re “less than” without hair? It’s lying. Pay attention to those thoughts and challenge them. Would you say that to a friend? No? Then why say it to yourself?
  2. Take Back the Narrative – Your story isn’t just about hair loss. It’s about resilience, growth, and self-acceptance. You get to decide how this chapter is written. Whether that means sharing your journey or just reminding yourself how far you’ve come, choose empowerment over fear.
  3. Take Baby Steps – You don’t have to go from hiding to full confidence overnight. Maybe you go without a wig for an hour at home, wear a headscarf out in public, switch between long and short hair, or share your journey with someone you trust. Small steps add up.
  4. Find Real Solutions to Keep Doing What You Love – It’s not about covering up; it’s about showing up.  Whether that means wearing a scarf to the gym, or posting a photo without hair or in a scarf on social media or a dating profile. For hiking, there are hats with hair or swimming go without or find a cool swim caps; small choices can help you reclaim your life.
  5. Find Your People – You are not alone in this. Alopecia World is a community full of people who get it. Whether it’s online support groups, meetups, or just one friend who understands, lean on them. Being around people who genuinely see you can change everything.
  6. Redefine Beauty on Your Terms – Society’s beauty standards change all the time. The only standard that matters? Yours. Whether you embrace baldness, love wigs, or switch it up depending on the day, you get to decide what confidence looks like for you.
  7. Give Yourself Grace – Confidence isn’t about never struggling; it’s about showing up for yourself anyway. Some days will be easier than others, and that’s okay. Be patient with yourself. Healing isn’t a straight line.

So, ask yourself: Who’s holding the remote to your confidence?

If you’ve handed it over to fear, self-doubt, or others’ opinions—It’s time to take it back.
