so im hoping someone here has some good words of advice... i have lost about 2/3 the hair on the back of my head and about 1/3 the hair in the front and on top. i wore a wig for about 6 months & HATED it! i wear scarves on my head most of the time, but at work, my boss wont let me wear them. she is one of those "mean-girls" who gets enjoyment out of making others miserable. i need some help on how to deal with her... girls can be SO mean! im SO sick of all these spots, so now im contemplating shaving my head. my husband is VERY supportive, but i cant stop freaking out about being "the bald girl" in the small town we live in! someone please help :)

thanks ahead of time!

Hi Jen, sorry to hear Da Boss is being a pain in the ar*se. You'd think it was written into their contract or something, wouldn't ya??
Anyway... I reckon you should get hold of a motorbike crash helmet and wear that all the time. If you get a full-face one with a dark visor, and some gloves as well, you can tell her you've become allergic to light and you think you may be turning into a vampire.
Alternatively.... wear one of those weird carnival masks, and when she asks, tell her you don't want anyone you meet outside (when you're with hat, and without face-covering) to associate you with the bald girl in work.
And finally... if all else fails.... just go to work naked, and this time, tell her you're embarrassed by your baldness and you're trying to deflect attention in the only way left open to you (might need some bottle to pull this one off!).

Hope one of these suggestions works for ya... let us know how you get on (or not....) :)

But seriously... why don't you just tell the boss to shove it? If she's so concerned about appearance, ask her why she doesn't wear a bag over her head, because she's such an ugly g*t?? ;)

Hugs, 'n' stuff...

Norm xx

Does your boss know why you wear a scarf? If she is unaware try having a conversation with her about it or talk to her boss. Maybe they are unaware that you have a medical condition???? You would be surprised how unaware some people can be. If that doesn't work I would go with one of Norms suggestions and I bet that would of made her wish she would of kept her mouth shut.
BTW Norm you are always good for a good laugh. Were do you come up with these ideas?

Hiya Petra, how's you? Ta for the compliment! Glad I can make you smile. Now, while you're busy laughing, all I have to do is...
...oh no, hang on, we have to be in the same room for that.... damn, knew I'd got it wrong!!!

Where do I get ideas from? Ummm.....think it's because I always used to get cr*ap similar to what Jen's going through. When I was a lad, I used to get it cos I had ginger hair (see? told ya being bald ain't that bad!!!), then when I grew it long in my teens I was always being told to get it cut... then when I went bald I used to get shouted at in the street etc. etc.
So, I think what happens is that when you get a lot of stuff like that from people who should really know better, you start to realise that the world/society is, in fact, constantly on the edge of crumbling into chaos. And you start to think, Hey, this is stupid.... so you step back, having realised how ludicrous the situation is (what's the big deal that my hair's a particular colour/length/it's disappeared?), and then move it along a few more levels of ludicrosity (if that's actually a word), just to see how these peep would react then. In Jen's case, the boss is griping cos she's wearing a scarf... so shift it along a little, and imagine what she'd say if Jen went to work wearing something REALLY daft - such as a helmet! Suddenly, a scarf seems even less of an issue, doesn't it? And then, if you think, "OK, she can't wear a scarf... so how else can she hide herself?" - and you come up with something to hide her face instead.
As for her going to work naked.... well, I'm a fella, and therefore by definition a pervert. So, now I'm at an age where I mentally undress wimmin without even having to see them (how sad is that???), I just used her baldness/work problem as an excuse. ;)

... but whether you actually believe that last one is entirely up to you.... and how well you know me.... ;) ...tee-hee!!
The Norm (or not!)

HiYa Norm, I'm fine. Just going to go out and do some weeding in the nude - hoping my neighbors won't fiqure out that I'm bald :-)))))))

Strangely, I bet the last thing the neighbours notice is your baldness.... on your head, anyway (I am, of course, intimating that you haven't got a hairy bum. What else could I possibly mean????) But if they ask, tell 'em your clothes fell off along with your hair.... that's how extreme some variants of alopecia are :))

Jennifer, do you have a Union you can go to? My husband who is the President of our Union suggested that you write a letter to your boss explaining the situation and also cc that letter to her bosses. If possible e-mail it to show that they have received it. If in the future they cause you any problems with your job you will have documented proof that they were made aware of your situation and if needed you can take that information to a lawyer.

I undestand your frustration. I started wearing wigs last year, but because sometimes it gets so hot where I work at I and the temperature outside is a lot hotter I would prefer to wear a scarf. I'm not completely bald and my hair can cover my bald spot unless the wind blows or it starts raining. lol! I have a lot of insecurities about having alopecia. It's an everyday overwhelming sitation for me. I don't take it lightly, instead I stress over it every morning and especially on special occasions. My supervisor allowed me to wear the scarf for a little while but said that it looked unprofessional and since it has nothing to with my religion I should wear a wig instead. I didn't know what to do so I started back wearing the wig. Like you, the people in the main office for my job agreed with my supervisor and said maybe I should braid my hair up and then put the wig on because it would help my scalp still get some hair. People can be heartless when they don't exactly understand or care to understand what you are going through. Stay strong. Oh, and thanks Norm. I needed to laugh. :-)

I have androgenic alopecia, I'm watching my hairline recede and a basic all over thinning occur. Most people say it's not overly noticeable yet, finally my husband admitted he could see it. I went to a buzz cut a year ago and kept it that way until about 2 months ago. I've finally let it grow out about 3/4" and have a pixie-ish cut now. I found it to be liberating even with all of the looks. I live in fairly small conservative town so there were a lot of looks. The people who matter supported me and love me regardless, everyone else can shove it.
Shaving it wasn't that bad at all and I got a lot of compliments on my head shape. It makes getting ready in the morning a heck of a lot faster and it made me a lot less self-conscious about the loss. As it gets longer I find myself obsessing again. I'm sure there's a shave in my future again and a point where I just keep it.
I imagine your boss will have something to say about that too but it really is more her problem than it is yours.
Best of luck to you!
