I would have probably been on Will Smith's side, but I saw a breakdown of the event and he thought the "joke" was hilarious until he saw how it hurt Jada. If he had not laughed, and then took action, I would have more respect for him.

I have had alopecia for over 40 years now, but I wear a wig and go about my day and have never been harassed or bullied by anyone or made to feel small.  All my friends know about my condition and if asked, I always explain and never feel it is not anyone's business to know why I wear a wig.  Sure I felt bad when my hair fell out and I  had to resort to wearing a wig, but it certainly was not the end of my enjoyment of life or anything so devastating.  I already had a husband and 2 daughters and everybody took my condition in stride, and now I have 3 grand daughters and they too are just as used to seeing my bald head as they are to seeing me with a wig on.

In  my opinion, I would be really hugely pissed off and mortified if my husband was to go up  and slap someone if they knowingly or unknowingly made a joke about my condition.  I think if Will had just got up and said, like Cheryl also commented, "Not cool man, do you even know about Alopecia?"  This would have been so much more effective than the slap.  He has now just turned himself into a cartoon.  And from the very little that I know of Jada Pinkett Smith, she seems like a strong woman and personality.  I would not think she needed a husband to protect her from a comedian.  Chris Rock did act a lot more dignified.  I think a lot of people like me, who liked Will Smith, now feel let down by him.  I wonder if he would have got up and smacked Ricky Gervais?Anyway, one way or another Alopecia is now in the news and a lot more people at least know the word!

Jada is a drama llama more like a snippy Chihuahua and I don't care what she says she has I am not buying it. As seen at the Oscars she has a shaved head not bald head - big difference. And the video where she initially shaved shows a long scar or hair missing from a hair treatment in a long line. Where is the bald head? Bald circular spots? As someone without millions in the bank  maybe she received some kind of treatment to make a uniformly shaved head with no bald spots I just don't get it. I have totalis, started off as areata with bald circles and progressed. I would give anything for her GI Jane look. Now I do have to say after watching countless vids of different people with it, traction alopecia looks very different. I know a girl who pulled who hair in a super tight pony for years, the sides of her head had significant hair loss and a receding hair line. I don't know how the prognosis for this type of alopecia is, I would think it's an external source it could be corrected more easily then an internal source. I am told I have an auto immune disease but I feel a lot of times the doctors don't know and just say that. Oh my loss all started with my eyebrows. Then 10 years later eyelashes followed by my my hair. Doctors are zero help.

I have FFA and LLP.  If my partner or husband had behaved in that way, I would have considered leaving him.  Jada has been candid and is a woman who is very capable of taking care of herself.  She is an adult.  She has been open about her condition.  She has brought a needed spotlight to alopecia of all kinds.  He made it all about him, even in his "apology". He has undone some of the good she's done.  He has legitimized goon behavior to many who would look up to him.  He may have even hurt the black community. He should not have been able to get his Best Actor Oscar award.    Badly done.  And i expect he will do better from now on.

From what I understand, Chris Rock did not know Jada had alopecia. I saw the photos of her, and she looked gorgeous! Her hair was cut very short, and maybe there were bald areas, but I couldn’t see them. If I didn’t know it, I would have thought she had made a decision to shave down her hair for any number of reasons. Also, Chris was the one who did that movie on how important hair is to Black women, and I don’t believe he’s ever made fun of someone for something they had no control over.

I’m sure someone else here pointed out that initially Will laughed until he noticed the expression on his wife’s face.

This incident calls for conversations on civility.  I was taught by my parents not to make personal comments and to keep my hands to myself.  Chris Rock made an un-called for joke about Jada Smith's physical appearance--not good.  Will Smith goes up, hits Chris, and uses profanity--not good either.  It would have been better if he had confronted Chris Rock asking him for an apology or telling him that Jada has Alopecia and is not a subject for a joke.  I hope this incident brings more awareness of the various kinds of Alopecia.

I was not impressed with Will's "galant gesture".  I may have missed it in the comments but did anyone noticed that he laughed prior to taking the stage to smack Chris.  In my opinion, if he were sincere, he would have sat quietly, not laughed, not smacked anyone BUT taken the opportunity to promote AA awareness in his speech and at the same time put Chris in his place.
