I know alopecia also effects nails mine are starting to have little pivits in them and I've been getting acrylic nails put on, but lately it seems like they are not staying on, and i do have a bad habit of biting my nails, and i still chew on the acrylic a little when i do have them. But I was just wondering if any one else who's nails are being effected and has acrylic if it effects the life of your acrylic nails.

Heather,
I have always had a problem with pivits in my nails. I have been to see many specialists in the early years of my diagnosis and this is a common factor for alopecia patients. My nails are always weak and very thin. I used to get acrylic nails, but have switched to the Gel Nails. They are really stong and thin and look absolutely amazing. Once the tips are glued on they brush several layers of gel over the nails and it hardens under the UV light. THey last me three to four weeks before I have to get them filled. I prefer the french manicure, and they stay nice and shiny the whole time.
Heather,
I've had pitted nails for years and have never had problems with acrylics. I bite my nails from time to time, when I have fake nails I have a habit of ripping them off. Because I do fiberglass nails and whatnot, I know that you must sand the surface of the nail a little, like in any good paint job, so everything sticks its best. Has your nail technician been doing this? If you've changed people, the glue she's using may not be as good or her technique different. Could be a number of factors but there's always a way around. I don't recommend wearing these all the time, take a two week break in between applications so your nails don't turn yellow or you get a fungus infection - very nasty! Good luck! :)
I have pits in my nails too. The doctor told me it's very common with alopecia, and when I noticed more were appearing, the doctor said it meant the disease was progressing. One of my nails has always had little pits in it for as long as I can remember, and it was way before I started having signs of alopecia. They said the pits can be indicators of alopecia in the future if someone doesn't already have it. I just had acrylic nails put on for my wedding, but didn't have any problems with them...however I don't get them on a regular basis.
I have the pits and ridges in my nails and they are also paper thin. I stopped biting my nails after high school and keep acrylics on my nails now. The pits and ridges don't affect the longevity of my acrylics, but lately I have switched to diamond gel nails and solar nails because they last longer and I don't have to paint them. The next time you get your nails done, have your nail tech use a bonding agent before using the acrylic primer -- and always wash your hands and dry them thoroughly immediately before getting them done -- that should help your nails last longer between fills.

Honestly though, I don't get how you could bite the acrylics -- doesn't the hardness of the acrylics chip your teeth?
Nah your teeth are stronger than the acrylic. I used to ALWAYS wear acrylic nails (not due to pitting though...just liked them) and after a while I would always end up biting them all off. LOL.
Thanks guys! I'm going to try to keep putting nail polish on them everyday for about a month and then talk to the nail people and see if that changes anything!

My nails are HORRIBLE. They're heavily grooved and appear to have been roughed up with sandpaper. Also, they tend to grow unevenly.

I've considered getting a manicure from a professional, but I fear even their skillful ministrations will be no match for these ugly things.
Hi. I'm Andrea.

I have used Acrylics for the past 3 years. I have been AU for 4.
I have had a few short periods when I had the acrylics off, but not for very long.
My nails are so very weak and they split, bleed and are so sensitive. The acrylics make my fingers much more functional. I keep them very short, but sturdy.
All my nail on my hands were very damaged for serveral months. I used a foam which helped and now only one of my nails has a small discoloration. It bothered me very much and I went and got fake nails put on, which as a man was very unconfortable.
I have never liked acrylic nails. They have always been uncomfortable for me, and just feel weird. My nails have never gotten so bad that they are just falling apart or bleeding or anything- they just look ugly.

My alternative solution has been a different product. OPI (nail polish brand) makes a ridge filler. With nail polish over the ridge filler, my nails look beautiful and smooth just like they did before they started getting the ridges and little pivots. I know you can buy OPI at any trade secret, sephora, and even target is carrying it now. Trade secret or drugstore.com is probably the best best for finding the ridge filler though. It dries opaque white though, so this is unfortunately probably not that great a solution for men dealing with this who want their nails to look just like plain unpainted nails.

Just thought I'd pass this along just in case anyone else is acrylic-averse like me!

I have alopecia atreata and i put on fake nails (done prof.) and i took one off, now i have no nail. its short and barely there. :/
